How Marion Township, Allen County began

Marion Township, in the northwest corner of Allen County, was first set off in December 1833 from the north end of Amanda Township, and took its present 42-square-mile form in 1848 when it gained part of Jennings Township, Putnam County, and six sections of Jennings Township, Van Wert County. German Catholic settlers from the Fort Jennings area bought land here in the 1830s as the Miami and Erie Canal route was fixed; the canal reached Delphos about 1845, and the township took in the eastern half of the city, which merged from four canal towns in 1851. Landeck, a German Catholic farm village, has been a parish since 1865. The 1880 census counted 2,485 people outside Delphos; Wikipedia gives 6,629 for the whole township in 2020.

Settled 1830s (German settlers near the canal route; William Scott and William Brady open the first road about 1834), incorporated set off December 1833 from Amanda Township; reorganized 1848, by settlers of Township 3 South, Range 5 East petitioned the Allen County commissioners in 1833.

Where the name comes from

No source states why the township is called Marion. It is one of twelve Marion Townships in Ohio, and the name was given in 1833 when the original township was set off, but the 1885 county history does not explain it.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or trail specific to Marion Township is recorded in the sources checked. The township lies in the Auglaize River valley, in the northwestern Ohio land north of the Greenville treaty line that the Wyandot, Seneca, Lenape, Shawnee, Potawatomi, Odawa and Ojibwe ceded at Fort Meigs in September 1817. The Shawnee reservations the treaty set aside lay to the east and south, at Wapakoneta and on Hog Creek near Lima, until the Shawnee ceded them in 1831. The Ottawa kept use of tracts on the Great and Little Auglaize.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Ottawa.

Stories

The ten-mile woods

About 1834 William Scott and William Brady opened the first road from the Auglaize River through the site of Delphos to Van Wert. It ran through what was called the 'ten-mile woods,' and not a single cabin stood along it; the region was, in the words of an early Delphos writer quoted in 1885, 'dreary and sickly.' Then the canal route was fixed. The Miami and Erie had been authorized with a federal land grant in 1828, surveyed by Samuel Forrer from 1830, and finished about 1845, and land prices rose as soon as its course was settled. Germans who had settled near old Fort Jennings in 1834 saw the opportunity: Ferdinand Bredeick bought a tract for himself and another for a brother still in Germany, and others, among them Theodore Wrocklage, Bernard Esch and Casper Geise, took up land in the northwest of the township. Out of that settlement came both Delphos and the farm parish of Landeck.

A farm parish rebuilt after the storm

The Catholic community at Landeck began in 1865 as a station of the Delphos parish, serving German farm families, and in 1867 it built its first church and became a mission with its first resident pastor, Father Elias Maesfrancx. By 1885 it had grown to about ninety-six families under Father J. B. Heiland, after a parsonage fire in 1876 had been followed by a brick residence. A larger church went up in 1904. On March 19, 1948 a tornado destroyed that church and killed two young boys, and the parish rebuilt in 1949. In 1970 Landeck became the sister parish of St. Patrick Church in Spencerville.
