How Delphos began
Delphos grew out of four rival hamlets — Howard, Section Ten, West Bredeick and East Bredeick — that took shape between 1836 and 1846 along the route of the Miami and Erie Canal, drawing German Catholic immigrants and canal laborers to the Allen-Van Wert county line. The four merged into one town called Delphos in 1851, a name drawn from the Greek Delphi. The canal made it a manufacturing and shipping hub, one of the major ports along the canal, and by 1879 more than a hundred factories operated there. Delphos today straddles both counties, with its Allen County half in Marion Township; it remains a small industrial and farm-trade city.
Settled 1836-1842, platted West Bredeick Street by the Ferdinand Bredeick family and East Bredeick by Fr. John Otto Bredeick, along the canal, incorporated 1851 (as the merged town of Delphos), by Rev. John Otto Bredeick and Ferdinand Bredeick (East and West Bredeick), Samuel Forrer (Howard), Oramel Bliss, Benjamin Franklin Hillister and Samuel Pettit (Section Ten).
Where the name comes from
When the four founding settlements incorporated as one town in 1851, they took the name Delphos, drawn from the Greek Delphi/Delphus (the site of the Delphic oracle). Wikipedia's article states the name derives from the Greek god Delphus.
Before the town
The Allen-Van Wert-Putnam county corner around Delphos sat along the Auglaize and its tributaries in land that stayed closed to white settlement under the Treaty of Greenville (1795) until the Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (1817) and the follow-on Treaty of St. Marys (1818) opened it. The 1817 treaty set aside a 25-square-mile Shawnee reservation on Hog Creek (the Ottawa River) at present Lima, and a separate Ottawa reservation of 25 square miles on Blanchard's Fork of the Auglaize (in neighboring Putnam County, centered on the Tawa villages that became Ottawa, Ohio); both were sold and their people removed west in the early 1830s. A locally compiled page on the Delphos-area history site names Indian trails through the district — a Sugar Ridge Trail linking Fort Wayne and Findlay that later became a public road, and a Defiance Trail — and lists Shawnee, Ottawa, Miami and Wyandot presence in the wider Auglaize country, along with named leaders (Blue Jacket, Black Hoof/Catahecassa at Wapakoneta, the Ottawa chief Petoniquet/Pedanquit at Tawa). No mound, earthwork, or named village specific to the Delphos townsite itself was found in the sources checked.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Ottawa, Miami, Wyandot.

Stories
Four towns, one name
Delphos did not begin as a single place. In the 1830s and 1840s a Catholic priest from Verl, in Westphalia, Rev. John Otto Bredeick, and the family of Ferdinand Bredeick established settlements called East Bredeick and West Bredeick Street along the route the Miami and Erie Canal engineers had chosen. Nearby, surveyor Samuel Forrer laid out Howard, named for his wife's family, and a trio of land buyers — Oramel Bliss, Benjamin Franklin Hillister and Samuel Pettit — platted Section Ten on ground bought from Christoph Moenning. A fifth attempt, Marble Town, never took hold. For years the four hamlets competed for canal trade and settlers before their leaders agreed in 1851 to merge into one incorporated town, choosing the name Delphos. The canal that had pulled them together as rivals became, within a few years, the reason to unite: a single town could handle canal freight, warehousing and factory sites far better than four scattered villages squabbling over the same towpath.
The canal town that outgrew the canal
The Miami and Erie Canal, a 274-mile channel linking Cincinnati to Toledo, ran directly through Delphos, and for a few decades the town's fortunes rose and fell with it. Construction crews were the first wave of settlers; merchants and factory owners followed once boats started moving freight. On July 4, 1845, the first canal boat through town carried Ohio's governor as a passenger, a fitting inauguration for a place that would soon become one of the major ports along the canal. By 1879 more than a hundred factories operated in Delphos, trading goods nationally and internationally by canal and, increasingly, by rail. Railroads eventually did what they did to canal towns across Ohio: they pulled freight off the water and onto steel rails, and Delphos's role as a canal hub faded even as the town itself kept growing as a manufacturing center.
A cathedral-scale church from an immigrant parish
St. John's Catholic parish traces to 1842, founded by German Catholic families who had emigrated from the Osnabruck region and settled around the young canal town. Nearly forty years later the congregation built a church at 110 N. Franklin Street far larger and more ornate than its modest 1842 origins might suggest: a Romanesque Revival building designed by S.W. Lane, completed in 1880, with a rib-vaulted nave, twin rows of Corinthian columns, and a high altar modeled on the Basilica di San Clemente in Rome. Architectural historians have called the interior unmatched anywhere in western Ohio. It stands today as physical evidence of how much wealth the canal and its factories brought to a farm-country immigrant parish in one generation.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Delphos, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,879 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
