How Bluffton began

Bluffton was settled in 1831 by a mix of Swiss Mennonite, German Reformed and Irish Catholic families and was first known as Crogan's Corners, after its postmaster. When residents incorporated the community they renamed it Bluffton for the hilly ground the town sits on. The Mennonite settlers' descendants founded a college here in 1899 that grew into Bluffton University, still the village's largest institution. A farm-and-college town on Riley Creek in northwest Allen County, Bluffton today buys its drinking water from the Village of Ottawa rather than pumping its own wells.

Settled 1831, by Swiss Mennonite, German Reformed and Irish Catholic settlers.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first called Crogan's Corners, for its postmaster. When the community incorporated, Irish residents proposed 'Shannon' for the green countryside, but another Ohio village already held that name, so the town took 'Bluffton' instead, for its hilly terrain.

Before the town

No village- or township-specific Native American site, village, or trail record was found for Bluffton itself in the sources checked. The land lay within the area closed to settlement by the Treaty of Greenville (1795) and opened by the Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (1817); the nearest documented reservations were the Shawnee's Hog Creek tract around present Lima (Shawnee Township, about 10 miles east) and the Ottawa reservation on Blanchard's Fork of the Auglaize in neighboring Putnam County (about 10 miles northwest), both ceded and their residents removed west by the early 1830s. Nothing more specific to Bluffton was located.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Ottawa.

Stories

A Mennonite crossroads becomes a college town

Bluffton's founding families were mostly Swiss Mennonites who had made their way to northwest Ohio by way of Pennsylvania, joined by German Reformed and Irish Catholic neighbors on the same stretch of rolling ground above Riley Creek. For decades it was simply a farm-trade village with an unusual religious mix for the region. That changed in 1899 when the Mennonite community founded Central Mennonite College on land donated by a local judge's family, giving the village an institution that would outlast the name changes to come: Mennonite Seminary, then Bluffton College, then, in 2004, Bluffton University. The school anchored the town's identity in a way the crossroads store and post office never could, and it remains Bluffton's largest employer and its main reason for outside visitors today.

Dillinger's $6,000 afternoon

On August 14, 1933, the Bluffton Bank on Main Street had an unwelcome and famous visitor: John Dillinger, in the early months of the bank-robbing spree that would make him the country's most wanted man, held up the bank and left with roughly $6,000 in cash. The building still stands and still functions as a bank, now Citizens National Bank of Bluffton, and the robbery remains the single most retold event in the village's twentieth-century history — a small, ordinary Allen County bank swept up for one afternoon into national outlaw lore.

From village wells to a neighbor's river

For most of its history Bluffton supplied its own water from village wells. That changed in the mid-2010s: federal drinking-water records show ten consecutive quarters of Total Trihalomethane violations from late 2013 through early 2016 — TTHMs are disinfection byproducts that form when chlorine reacts with organic matter — and the village's remaining wells were taken out of service in May and June 2016. By the time Bluffton's 2021 consumer confidence report went out, the village was no longer treating its own groundwater at all: it was purchasing finished drinking water from the Village of Ottawa, whose plant treats surface water drawn from the Blanchard River a dozen miles to the northwest. It is a small illustration of a common pattern in small Ohio water systems — trading the cost and risk of running a treatment plant for the simpler job of buying water wholesale from a larger neighbor.

A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
