How Lima began

Lima was laid out in March 1831 as the seat of newly organized Allen County, five months before the Hog Creek Shawnee ceded the reservation that took in part of the present city, and was named for Lima, Peru, reportedly because Peruvian bark (the source of quinine) was needed against the malaria that plagued the Black Swamp country. It stayed a small courthouse town until May 19, 1885, when Benjamin Faurot's well struck the Trenton Limestone oil pool and touched off one of the great oil booms of the 19th century, drawing Standard Oil and making Lima a refining and manufacturing city almost overnight. The Lima Locomotive Works, built on that industrial base, became a world leader in steam locomotives, and Standard Oil's Solar Refinery ran continuously into the 2000s under a chain of owners. Today Lima is Allen County's county seat and largest city, still anchored by its refinery, its courthouse square, and the rail and highway lines the 19th-century boom laid down.

Settled 1824, platted 1831, incorporated 1842, by Allen County commissioners platted the town as county seat in 1831; first settlers in the vicinity by the mid-1820s; Lima was formally organized as a city with Henry DeVilliers Williams as first mayor in 1842.

Where the name comes from

Lima was named for Lima, Peru. The name is traditionally explained by the region's need for Peruvian (cinchona) bark, the source of quinine, to treat the malaria common in the Black Swamp country of northwest Ohio at the time the town was platted.

Before the town

The land Lima sits on was Shawnee country into the 1830s. Under the Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (Fort Meigs), signed September 29, 1817, the United States set aside a 25-square-mile reservation on Hog Creek for the Shawnee living there; that reservation lay in what is now Shawnee Township, immediately south of the city, and part of present-day Lima extends into northeastern Shawnee Township, so the reservation's boundary reached the edge of the town site. The Hog Creek Shawnee ceded this reservation to the United States in the Treaty of Wapakoneta, signed August 8, 1831 -- the same year Lima was platted -- and were removed west to Kansas in 1832-1833. Allen County as a whole had been opened to settlement only in 1817-1818, after the Fort Meigs and St. Marys treaties, and was still frontier when the county seat was laid out fourteen years later. No mounds, earthworks, or named villages specific to the city site itself are documented in the sources consulted. Timeline

  1. — The Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (Fort Meigs) sets aside the 25-square-mile Hog Creek reservation for the Shawnee, covering what became Shawnee Township at the edge of the future Lima.
  2. — Allen County is created by the Ohio legislature, named for Colonel John Allen, killed at the Battle of Frenchtown in the War of 1812.
  3. — The Hog Creek Shawnee cede their reservation in the Treaty of Wapakoneta; the same year, Allen County is formally organized and Lima is platted as its seat.
  4. — The Hog Creek Shawnee are removed from Allen County to Kansas.

Stories

A gas well that struck oil instead

In February 1885, paper-mill owner Benjamin C. Faurot was not looking for oil. His plant on the Ottawa River made strawboard and egg cases, and he wanted a cheaper fuel than coal, so he brought in cable-tool drillers from the Pennsylvania oil fields to bore a natural-gas well. On May 19, 1885, at about 1,252 feet, the well struck the Trenton Limestone and came in with oil, not gas. Lima's Daily Republican wrote that if the well held, "look out for the biggest boom Lima ever had." It held. Faurot organized the Trenton Rock Oil Company, excited local investors formed the Citizens' Oil Company (limited to 100 shareholders with a five-share cap), and within a year Lima was the most productive oilfield in the United States, part of a pool that eventually yielded some 300 million barrels before its 1904 peak and decline.

The crude nobody wanted, until Standard Oil figured it out

Lima crude was thick and stank of sulfur, and refiners of the day had no good way to use it. John D. Rockefeller saw the opportunity in the problem: Standard Oil bought up Lima-field oil cheaply, stockpiling some 40 million barrels of crude other companies wouldn't touch. The fix came from Standard Oil chemist Herman Frasch, who applied on February 21, 1887 to patent a desulfurization process that pulled the sulfur out and left a marketable, odorless kerosene stock. Standard Oil had built the Solar Refining Company at Lima in 1886, a year before that patent application, and the refinery stayed in continuous operation under a chain of owners -- Standard Oil of Ohio, BP, Clark USA, Premcor, Valero, and Husky Energy -- into the 21st century, long after the oil field itself had gone quiet.

From farm machinery to the world's Shay locomotives

Lima Machine Works started in 1877 building agricultural and sawmill equipment, ordinary shop work for a small Ohio town. In 1878 the company took a contract to build a locomotive to a strange geared design worked out by Michigan lumberman and self-taught engineer Ephraim Shay -- a locomotive meant to crawl slowly and powerfully over the rough, ungraded track of logging camps rather than run fast on a mainline. It worked, and Shay licensed his design to the Lima works exclusively. Over the following decades the company, reorganized several times and finally renamed Lima Locomotive Works in 1916, built Shays for loggers, miners, and industrial railroads. In the 1920s, chief engineer William E. Woodard's "Super Power" steam locomotive designs -- more efficient, faster-steaming machines like the 1925 A-1 Berkshire -- carried Lima's reputation well beyond geared logging engines and into the front rank of American locomotive builders, at one point giving the company roughly a fifth of the national market.

Sheriff Sarber and the Dillinger jailbreak

John Dillinger was being held in the Allen County Jail on a robbery charge when, on the evening of October 12, 1933, three men walked into the sheriff's office while Sheriff Jess Sarber was eating dinner with his wife Lucy and Deputy Wilbur Sharp. One of the men, Harry Pierpont, claimed they were from the Indiana State Prison and had come for Dillinger; when Sarber asked for credentials, Pierpont answered by drawing a gun and said, "Here is our credentials. We want Johnny." Sarber moved for his own weapon and was shot; Mrs. Sarber and the deputy were locked in the basement, and Dillinger walked free. Sarber died at Lima Memorial Hospital at 8:05 that evening, just over two hours after the shooting. Pierpont and fellow gang member Charles Makley were later sentenced to death for the killing, and Russell Clark to life in prison; Dillinger himself was shot dead by federal agents in Chicago the following July.

Building the reservoirs, from Lost Creek to Williams

Lima's drinking water has always come from two directions: the Ottawa River on the east side and the Auglaize River on the west. The city built its east-side system first, opening the Lost Creek Reservoir in 1918, adding Metzger Lake in 1946 and Ferguson Reservoir in 1958, all fed by pump stations off the Ottawa. The much larger west-side Bresler Reservoir, fed from the Auglaize and holding nearly 4.92 billion gallons, followed in 1970. The newest and largest piece came decades later: Williams Reservoir, the second west-side reservoir, was built in 2012 with a capacity of about 5.2 billion gallons. Together the five reservoirs hold about 15 billion gallons.
