How Bath Township, Allen County began

Bath Township holds the distinction of the first permanent white settlement within present-day Allen County: Christopher S. Wood and his family arrived from Logan County in April 1824 and settled on Sugar Creek, and Wood went on to lay out the town of Lima on his own township's Section 31 in 1831, making it the county seat. Bath Township organized its own local government in 1829, two years before Allen County itself existed as an organized county. Today the city of Lima occupies the township's southwestern portion, with farmland and the villages' old church and school sites filling the rest.

Settled April 1824 (Christopher S. Wood and family), incorporated township government organized March 2, 1829, by Christopher S. Wood.

Where the name comes from

No source we consulted explains why the township was named Bath (other Ohio townships of the same name exist in Greene and Summit counties, apparently unrelated namings). The name predates Allen County's own 1831 organization -- Bath Township already existed and had its own government by 1829, two years before the county was organized, and no record of its naming survives in either the county history or Allen or Mercer County records.

Before the town

No Native American site, village or trail specific to Bath Township itself was found in the sources checked. The city of Lima, platted in 1831 on the township's Section 31, sits on ground that had been Shawnee country until the 1831 treaty cession that opened Allen County to settlement; the Hog Creek Shawnee reservation itself (1817-1832/33) lay mainly to the south in what became Shawnee Township, not in Bath Township. Allen County's wider Native American record includes the Hog Creek reservation, the 1817 and 1831 treaties, and Shawnee removal.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee.

Stories

The settler who founded the county seat on his own land

Christopher S. Wood led his family out of Logan County in the spring of 1824, traveling by the Miami River route and spending sixteen days in the wilderness before reaching land on Sugar Creek in what would become Bath Township's Section 7 -- the first permanent white settlement inside the future Allen County. Wood did not stay only a farmer. By 1829 he was prominent enough to help organize Bath Township's own government, ahead of the county itself, and in February of that year the state legislature named him commissioner to find a site for the future county seat. He chose ground in the southwestern part of his own township, on Section 31, and in March 1831 laid out the town as director of sales; the plat was filed that April. The town he platted became Lima, the seat of Allen County, built on the same township where he had first cleared land seven years before.

Four congregations in a decade

Bath Township's rural congregations organized in quick succession through the 1830s. Rev. George Swigert gathered a Methodist Society in 1835, and members built a log meeting house the next year. Abram Miller had already organized a German Baptist congregation in 1833; that group met for two decades before raising a permanent meeting house on Sugar Creek in 1853. A Disciples congregation organized in 1834-35 and put up its first building by 1840. Zion Evangelical Lutheran and a Presbyterian congregation followed. By the 1880s the township supported ten school buildings, twenty teachers and 404 pupils -- ordinary infrastructure for an Ohio farm township, but a marker of how fast the community around the new county seat had filled in after Wood's first clearing sixty years before.
