How Muskingum County began

Muskingum County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1804, from parts of Washington and Fairfield counties, and takes its name from the Muskingum River, a Native word most often translated "elk's eye" or, in the account of Moravian missionary David Zeisberger, given because elk once fed in numbers along its banks. Its seat, Zanesville, grew from a ferry crossing that Ebenezer Zane granted to his son-in-law John McIntire where Zane's Trace crossed the Muskingum in 1797, and briefly served as Ohio's second state capital from October 1810 to May 1812 before the legislature returned to Chillicothe and then settled permanently on Columbus. The land had been Shawnee ground before Euro-American settlement, home to the Muskingum River towns collectively called Wakatomika, burned by a Virginia militia expedition in August 1774 and never rebuilt on the Muskingum after that. Today Zanesville is known nationally for its unusual three-way Y-Bridge across the confluence of the Muskingum and Licking rivers, and the county for its pottery industry and its position at the edge of the Flint Ridge and Newark earthwork country.

Zanesville, the county seat, grew from the ferry and inn John McIntire built after Ebenezer Zane -- who had blazed Zane's Trace, the first overland federal road across Ohio, and received land grants at its river crossings in payment -- granted him the crossing of the Muskingum in 1797; the town, first called Westbourne, was renamed Zanesville in 1801. Zanesville's early prominence as a road and river town led the Ohio General Assembly to move the state capital there from Chillicothe: citizens erected a building in 1809 that served as Ohio's capitol from October 1, 1810 to May 1812, after which the legislature returned to Chillicothe, dissatisfied with Zanesville's distance and thin lodging for legislators, before settling permanently on the new town of Columbus in 1816. The old capitol building continued afterward as the Muskingum County courthouse until 1874. Zanesville's other defining landmark is the Y-Bridge, a three-way bridge spanning the confluence of the Muskingum and Licking rivers at the foot of Main Street, first built in 1814, rebuilt several times since and listed on the National Register November 2, 1973; aviator Amelia Earhart is widely quoted as having called Zanesville, because of the bridge's unusual shape, one of the most recognizable cities in the country from the air.
