How New Concord began

New Concord was laid out on March 24, 1827, by Judge David Findley on his own pastureland as a stop on the National Road, and was officially incorporated in 1838. It was settled largely by Scots-Irish Presbyterians whose families had come from western Pennsylvania along Zane's Trace, and in 1837 those settlers chartered Muskingum College (now Muskingum University) to educate the sons of the farming community in the classical tradition; women were admitted on equal terms beginning in 1854. The village is best known today as the boyhood home of astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn, whose family moved there soon after his birth, and as the birthplace of William Rainey Harper, the scholar who became the first president of the University of Chicago.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted explains why the founders chose the name "New Concord"; it was not stated in the village's own history page or in the Wikipedia article. (Concord, a common New England and Pennsylvania place name meaning harmony/agreement, was widely reused by settlers moving west; that general pattern is not, however, a cited fact about this specific village.)

Before the town

No Native American sites, villages, or trails specific to New Concord's own ground were found in the sources we checked. The village grew up along Zane's Trace, the road Ebenezer Zane and his party (including his brother Jonathan) cut through Ohio beginning in 1796-97; the Zane family is recorded as having close friendships with Wyandot and Delaware (Lenape) people, who visited their homes at the Muskingum River crossing that became Zanesville, a day's travel west of New Concord. No mound, earthwork or named village at the New Concord site itself was documented in these sources.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware).

Stories

The boy from New Concord who orbited the Earth

John Glenn's family moved to New Concord when he was a toddler, and he grew up in the small Presbyterian college town along the National Road, attending New Concord schools and then Muskingum College, where he earned an engineering degree in 1943 and met Annie Castor, whom he married. He became a Marine Corps fighter pilot, then a test pilot, then in February 1962 the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times aboard Friendship 7. He later served four terms as a U.S. Senator from Ohio and, in 1998 at age 77, returned to space aboard the shuttle Discovery. His boyhood home at 72 West Main Street, where his father ran a plumbing business, is preserved today as the John and Annie Glenn Museum and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

A college chartered by farmers' sons

Ten years after Judge Findley laid out New Concord as a National Road stop, the Scotch-Irish Presbyterian families who had settled the area petitioned the Ohio legislature to charter a college. Muskingum College opened in 1837 specifically, in the founders' words, to educate the sons of the farming village in the classical college tradition, and graduated its first class just two years later. The school broke from many contemporaries by admitting women on equal terms starting in 1854, more than a century before it eventually took university status in 2009. In 1958, two major branches of American Presbyterianism chose the campus's Brown Chapel as the site to sign their historic merger agreement, underscoring how tightly the college and the village's Presbyterian identity stayed bound together.

49,674 days of records, 1887-08-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
