How Monroe Township, Muskingum County began

Monroe Township, in northeastern Muskingum County, was set off by the county commissioners on July 2, 1819, from the larger Highland Township, and named for President James Monroe. Settlers reached it by canoe up Wills Creek and White Eyes Creek from the Muskingum River, by way of a landing at Marquand's Mills, or overland by wagon from Cambridge on the Wheeling Road; Charles Marquand and James Sprague were early settlers who both lived into their nineties. Its chief community is Otsego, laid out in 1838, named for Otsego, New York, and home to the township hall. Two stone farmhouses here, the James Hunter Stone House and the McCully Log House, are on the National Register.

Incorporated July 2, 1819 (set off from Highland Township), by Muskingum County Commissioners.

Where the name comes from

Named for James Monroe, fifth President of the United States.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound, trail or treaty line specific to Monroe Township turned up in the sources reviewed. A secondary source states Otsego was 'built on a former Indian village site,' but we could not confirm this in Otsego's own Wikipedia article (which records only that the village was laid out in 1838 and named for Otsego, New York) or any other source we consulted, so it is not repeated here as fact. The county's documented Native record includes the Wakatomika-area Shawnee villages a few miles northwest in Jefferson and Cass townships.

Stories

Two ways in

Monroe Township's first families arrived by two very different routes. Some paddled canoes up the Muskingum River, then Wills Creek and White Eyes Creek, putting ashore at Marquand's Mills; others came overland by covered wagon from Cambridge along the Wheeling Road. Charles Marquand, whose mills gave the landing its name, and James Sprague both settled early and lived into their nineties, long enough to see the township's coal, timber and farmland fill in around them with Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian congregations and one-room schools, and Otsego grow into the township's largest village.
