How Adams Township, Muskingum County began
Adams Township, on the northern edge of Muskingum County, was organized in December 1826 out of Monroe and Madison townships and named for John Quincy Adams at the suggestion of Caleb Jordan, then a presidential candidate. James Wilcox is recorded as the first settler, arriving on Wills Creek around 1808-1810, and settlement filled in through the 1810s with families such as the Brelsfords, Wisecarvers and Shirers. It stayed a farming township of mills, log churches and one-room schools, with no incorporated village ever forming inside its boundaries. It is not the location of the Dresden/Wakatomika history recorded for Muskingum County's water-system fact sheet, and the George W. Adams House and Adams-Gray House despite the shared surname sit in neighboring Cass Township, not here.
Settled c. 1808-1810 (James Wilcox, Wills Creek), incorporated December 1826 (township organized from Monroe and Madison townships), by named at the suggestion of Caleb Jordan, Esq..

Before the town
No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty line specific to Adams Township turned up in the sources reviewed (the 1892 Goodspeed township chapter and the current Wikipedia article). The Dresden-area Shawnee village of Wakatomika, destroyed in 1774, sits several miles south in Jefferson and Cass townships, not Adams Township, despite Adams Township sharing ZIP code 43821 with the Dresden area.

Stories
A township with no town
Adams Township never grew a village of its own. Its history is instead a string of farm firsts recorded in the 1892 county memoir: the first road cut in 1812 by James Sprague and Sons, the first frame house raised by William Barton, the first brick house built by Jacob Gaumer Jr. in 1841, and the first marriage on record, David Shirer to Lydia Gaumer in 1822. Four Methodist and Lutheran congregations organized between 1821 and 1855, each starting in a log building before raising a frame church a generation later. By the time the county memoir was compiled in 1892, the township supported four school districts, still without a single incorporated town inside its lines.
