Life story
Howard Chandler Christy was born in Morgan County, Ohio, in 1872 and went to school in Duncan Falls. He studied at the Art Students League and under William Merritt Chase in New York.
He worked as a combat artist in the Spanish-American War, then became famous for the 'Christy Girl' illustrations from the early 1900s.
In World War I he painted a popular Navy recruiting poster, and later portraits including Grace Coolidge. His big canvas Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States (1940) hangs in the Capitol.
He died in Manhattan in 1952.
