How Erie County began
Erie County was formed on March 16, 1838 from the northern third of Huron County and a portion of Sandusky County, taking its name from the Erie people, whose own name -- rendered by French missionaries as the "Cat Nation" -- most scholars now read as referring to the eastern panther or wildcat of Iroquoian spiritual tradition rather than the housecat. The county sits at the heart of the Firelands, roughly 500,000 acres the Connecticut legislature set aside in 1792 to compensate residents of eight Connecticut towns -- Danbury, Fairfield, Greenwich, Groton, New Haven, New London, Norwalk and Ridgefield -- burned or raided by British forces in 1779 and 1781; the land could not be legally settled until the Wyandot, Ottawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Munsee and Lenape (Delaware) ceded it under the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry. Before that cession, the Sandusky Bay shore the county now occupies was a center of Wyandot life and, a century earlier still, may have marked the western edge of the Erie people's own territory before the Iroquois destroyed their confederacy in the Beaver Wars of the 1650s; the county seat, Sandusky, grew up on ground where English, French and British trading posts and forts rose and fell between the 1740s and 1763, and where a Wyandot village remembered as Ogontz's place stood before the American city was platted in 1818.

Boaters have reported a long, dark serpent in Lake Erie since the 1800s. Sightings off Port Clinton and Huron got regular enough that a local newspaper held a naming contest. The winner: South Bay Bessie.
