How Milan Township, Erie County began

Milan Township was organized about 1808 as Avery Township, merged for a time with Huron Township, and took its present name by 1821, some years before the village of Milan within it was platted in 1817 by Ebenezer Merry and incorporated in 1833 with a name borrowed from Milan, Italy. The township's defining 19th-century era was the Milan Canal, which opened to Lake Erie shipping on July 4, 1839 and by 1847 made Milan one of the busiest grain ports on the Great Lakes, with wagons lined up for miles waiting to unload -- a boom that ended when the canal's feeder dam failed in the 1868 flood. Before any of that, Moravian missionaries led Christian-convert Native Americans to a mission settlement called Petquotting on the township's ground, first three miles north of the future village from 1787 to 1791, then at a site within what became Milan itself from 1804 to 1808 or 1809.

Settled 1787 (Petquotting mission, first site), platted 1817 (Milan village, within the township), incorporated 1821 (township renamed Milan), by organized as Avery Township about 1808, renamed Milan Township by 1821.

Where the name comes from

The township took its present name from the village of Milan within it, which was itself named for Milan, Italy at its 1833 incorporation (it had originally been platted under the name "Beatty").

Before the town

Moravian missionaries led a group of Christian-convert Native Americans to found the mission settlement of Petquotting (also recorded as New Salem) on the township's ground about 1787, roughly three miles north of the site of the later village of Milan. Regional unrest -- the years leading into the Northwest Indian War -- forced the mission's abandonment by 1791; some of its people returned between 1804 and about 1808-09, this time resettling at a new location within what is now the village of Milan itself, on ground Ebenezer Merry would later plat as the town in 1817. No source found records a mound, trail or other Native site within the township beyond the two Petquotting locations.

  11. — The Thomas Alva Edison Birthplace was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stories

A missionary village, twice

Long before Ebenezer Merry platted his townsite, the ground that became Milan had already been settled and abandoned once by outsiders. Around 1787, Moravian missionaries led a band of Christian-convert Native Americans to a mission they called Petquotting, three miles north of where the village would eventually stand; regional violence in the years before the Northwest Indian War forced them out by 1791. Some of that same community returned between 1804 and about 1808 or 1809, but this time resettled closer in -- on ground that lay within the future village itself, the same land Merry surveyed into town lots in 1817. The overlap is easy to miss in a town now remembered mainly for a canal boom and a famous native son, but it means Milan's townsite carries two distinct chapters of Ohio's Moravian Indian mission history, one right on top of where its streets were eventually laid.
