How Milan began
Milan was platted in 1817 by Ebenezer Merry, first under the name "Beatty," on ground that had twice been home to a Moravian Indian mission called Petquotting; it was incorporated as Milan, after Milan, Italy, in 1833, the same year work began on the Milan Canal. That canal, open to Lake Erie shipping from July 4, 1839, made the small inland village one of the busiest grain ports on the Great Lakes by 1847 -- the same year Thomas Alva Edison was born in a modest brick house on the town's Edison Drive. Railroads bypassed Milan in the 1850s and the canal's feeder dam failed for good in an 1868 flood, ending the boom, but the birthplace of the inventor of the phonograph and the practical incandescent light bulb, and the brick Greek Revival streetscape of its historic district, still draw visitors to a village of under 1,400 people.

The village of Milan sits on ground that held a Moravian Indian mission settlement called Petquotting: first founded about three miles to the north in 1787 and abandoned by 1791 amid regional unrest, then resettled between 1804 and about 1808-09 at a site within what is now the village itself -- the same ground Ebenezer Merry platted as Milan (initially "Beatty") in 1817. No source found names a specific mound, trail or other Native site within the village beyond the resettled Petquotting mission.

Stories
Born at the peak of the boom
Thomas Alva Edison was born in Milan on February 11, 1847, in the same year the little canal town reached its high-water mark as a Great Lakes grain port -- wagons loaded with wheat lined up for miles outside the village waiting to unload onto canal boats bound for Lake Erie. His mother, Nancy Matthews Elliott, a former schoolteacher, taught him to read, write and do arithmetic at home; his father, Samuel Edison Jr., had fled to Ohio some years earlier after taking part in the failed Mackenzie Rebellion of 1837 in Upper Canada. The family's prosperity did not last as long as Edison's later fame: railroads built through the region in the 1850s bypassed Milan's canal trade, and in 1854, when Thomas was seven, the Edisons left for Port Huron, Michigan. The modest brick house where he was born still stands on what is now Edison Drive, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966, a fixed point of pilgrimage in a village whose own canal-era prosperity turned out to be even shorter-lived than the boy's residence in it.
