How Huron Township, Erie County began

Huron Township, on Lake Erie across the lower Huron River, was established by 1809 and shared one local government with Milan Township until 1820; like the city of Huron at the river mouth, it takes its name from the Wyandot, called Huron by the French. A French trading post stood at the river mouth about 1749, and the trader Jean B. Flemond (Flammand, later Flemming), a guide and scout for General Harrison in the War of 1812, settled on the east bank in 1805; Jabez Wright and Almon Ruggles surveyed the township by 1810. Its western part was prairie and its eastern part oak woods cut for the Huron shipyards; the mound and earthworks the early histories describe have been reduced by plowing. On its shore east of the city, Old Woman Creek became in 1980 the first freshwater estuary in the National Estuarine Research Reserve system.

Settled 1780s (French-Canadian traders), incorporated by 1809, by organized by 1809; joined with Milan (Avery) Township under one local government until 1820.

Where the name comes from

Named, like the city of Huron at the Huron River's mouth within it, for the Wyandot people, also called the Huron.

Before the town

The 1889 county history records a mound west of the Huron River on the W. H. Wright farm, about three miles above Huron, with a base of nearly an acre and still about twenty feet high after plowing, and an earthwork in the form of a fort enclosing about half an acre at the mouth of Sawmill Creek, two and a half miles west of Huron. Native people, principally Wyandot, traded at the river mouth with French traders and with Jean B. Flemond, who spoke several Native languages and kept a trading post there; Reed Sanford's trading post of 1816 was run by Flemond. Old Woman Creek, which reaches the lake in the township, was said in the 1889 history to be named for a Native woman who drowned in it. The Petquotting Moravian mission stood upstream in Milan Township.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot.

  • Sawmill Creek earthwork (earthwork) — mouth of Sawmill Creek, two and a half miles west of Huron, on land once owned by Dr. Haskins, prehistoric, culture not identified (archive.org)

Timeline

  1. — A French trading post was established at the mouth of the Huron River; it was abandoned before the Revolutionary War.
  2. — French-Canadian fur traders moved through the area during the French and Indian War, continuing after France ceded its North American territory in 1763.
  3. — Trader Gabriel Hunot worked the lower Huron River region.
  4. — Jean B. Flammand (anglicized John B. Flemming) arrived as a trader and became a permanent settler; Flemmings Cove is named for him.
  5. — Jean B. Flemond settled on lot fifteen on the east bank of the Huron River, just above the later Lake Shore railroad bridge, and opened a trading post.
  6. — Almon Ruggles and Jabez Wright, land agent for William Winthrop, who owned nearly the whole township, came to Huron.
  7. — Huron Township was organized.
  8. — Wright and Ruggles completed the township survey, nearly two years in the making; Major H. Russell opened a log hotel and store, probably the first public house in Huron County.
  9. — Russell and the ironworker J. S. Sprague finished a forty-ton sailing vessel fastened mostly with wooden pins; Flemond married a daughter of W. Pollock, likely the first Christian marriage in the area.
  10. — Reed Sanford opened a trading post at the mouth of the Huron River, managed by Flemond and F. Graham.
  11. — Huron and Milan townships, until then under one local government, were separated.
  12. — A harbor was created at the mouth of the Huron River and the village of Huron sprang up around it.
  13. — Old Woman Creek, on the township's Lake Erie shore, was designated the first freshwater Great Lakes estuary in the National Estuarine Research Reserve system.

Stories

The last estuary standing

Just east of the harbor town of Huron, where Old Woman Creek meets Lake Erie, sits a 573-acre reserve that looks, at first glance, like unremarkable marsh and swamp forest. It is anything but: over 90 percent of Ohio's original coastal wetlands were drained or developed by the 20th century, and Old Woman Creek is one of the few places where a freshwater estuary -- the mixing zone where a stream's current meets a Great Lake's open water -- still functions close to its natural state. Designated in 1980 as the first freshwater Great Lakes site admitted to the National Estuarine Research Reserve system, the reserve's marshes, swamp forest, barrier beach and riparian stream now serve as a spawning and nursery ground for crappie, bluegill and channel catfish, a working reminder, inside Huron Township's own boundaries, of what the whole Lake Erie shoreline once looked like before settlement.

Jean Flemond, trader and scout

Jean B. Flemond, whose name was later written Flammand and Flemming, is said to have visited the lower Huron River as early as 1790, and in 1805 he settled on the east bank just above where the Lake Shore railroad bridge was later built. He had little schooling but spoke French, English and several Native languages, and he set up a trading post to exchange eastern goods with Native people for furs. In the War of 1812 he served General William Henry Harrison as a guide and scout, and he later acted as interpreter at Norwalk when two Native men were hanged for the murders of John Woods and George Bishop. In 1811 he married a daughter of W. Pollock, likely the first Christian marriage in the area, and in 1816 he ran Reed Sanford's trading post at the river mouth. He died about 1827.
