How Williams County began
Williams County was created by the Ohio Legislature on February 12, 1820 (effective April 1, 1820) as one of fourteen new counties carved from unorganized land in northwestern Ohio, and organized for county government in 1824; it originally covered about 720 square miles reaching from the Indiana line east well past modern Defiance, before later county splits -- including the creation of Fulton County in 1850 -- reduced it to its present 420 square miles. It was named for David Williams, one of three New York militiamen who captured the British spy Major John André in 1780, a man who never set foot in Ohio. Bryan, platted in 1840 and named for its founder John A. Bryan, won a contest with the older village of Montpelier to become the county seat, chiefly on the strength of its greater commercial and industrial standing. The county's northern tier of townships sits inside the old Toledo Strip, the ground Ohio and Michigan nearly went to war over in 1835-36, and its history includes one of the northernmost Hopewell mound sites known in Ohio.
Bryan was platted in 1840 by John A. Bryan, for whom it was named, and incorporated as a village the following year (reincorporated as a city in 1941). It became county seat over the competing claim of the older village of Montpelier, prevailing, in the county historian's account, chiefly on 'its greater industrial and commercial importance and because of its higher population.' The present Williams County Courthouse, a Romanesque Revival building designed by the Toledo firm E. O. Fallis and Company, had its cornerstone laid in 1889 and was completed in 1891 at Main and High Streets; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 1973.
