How Brady Township, Williams County began
Brady Township, in the eastern part of Williams County, saw its first settlement in 1834 and takes its name from a Captain Brady remembered locally only as a pioneer settler -- the only Brady Township in Ohio. It holds the village of West Unity in its central section and the unincorporated community of Lock Port, where a sawmill went up the same year as the township's first settlement and a post office ran from 1837 to 1876. Lock Port's original 1871 covered bridge over the Tiffin River was replaced by a steel truss in 1919 and then, in 1998-99, by a new $1.7 million covered bridge -- a modern span built to look like the one the township lost, dedicated June 19, 1999.
Settled 1834.
Where the name comes from
Named for a Captain Brady, described only as a pioneer settler in the source checked; possibly, but not confirmed in any source we found, a reference to Revolutionary War frontier scout Captain Samuel Brady (1756-1795), for whom other Ohio and Pennsylvania places are named.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail or treaty site specific to Brady Township is recorded in the sources checked.

Stories
A Covered Bridge, Rebuilt a Century Later
The Tiffin River crossing at Lock Port has worn three different bridges in a century and a half. The first, a wooden covered bridge, went up in 1871, decades after the little mill settlement's own founding in 1834. By 1919 it had given way to a steel truss bridge, the more modern, less romantic choice of its era. That steel structure carried traffic for nearly eighty years before Williams County removed it in 1998 and replaced it with something deliberately old-fashioned: a new 180-foot covered bridge, engineered by the Toledo firm SSOE and built by S.E. Johnson Companies of Maumee for roughly $1.7 million, formally dedicated on June 19, 1999. It is a modern bridge built to look backward, a rebuilt echo of the 1871 original standing on ground that had already lost its post office and most of its village more than a century earlier.
