How Madison Township, Williams County began
Madison Township, established in 1843 and named for President James Madison, sits along the Michigan state line in the northern part of Williams County, inside the old Toledo Strip disputed by Ohio and Michigan in 1835-36. It holds the village of Pioneer in its northwest and the unincorporated community of Kunkle in its southwest, and it is home to the oldest surviving log house in Williams County: the Kunkle Log House, built by Vermont transplant Jacob Young in 1838, when most of the still-thinly-settled county was building in sawn wood rather than logs.
Incorporated Established in 1843.
Where the name comes from

Stories
The Log House the Township Almost Skipped
By the time Jacob Young built his log house in 1838, log construction was already becoming old-fashioned in Williams County -- the area was thinly settled, and most of the houses going up around it were framed from sawn lumber rather than notched logs. Young, who had come from Vermont, built the more traditional way anyway: a one-and-a-half story log house with a stone foundation, an external oven and a full basement, the latter two features uncommon enough in log cabins that they stand out in the National Register nomination today. Inside, the house held a full kitchen and living room, three bedrooms, a small 'borning room' set aside for childbirth, and a built-in cupboard meant to hold the family Bible. It survives as the oldest log house in the county, now owned and being restored by the Williams County Historical Society, a small holdout from an already-passing style of building.
