How Montpelier began

Montpelier was platted in 1845 and named for Montpelier, Vermont; a post office opened the following year, 1846, and the village incorporated in 1875. Straddling the St. Joseph River in the middle of the county, it lost the 1840 contest for the Williams County seat to Bryan despite petitioning the state legislature, a rivalry the two towns still needle each other about. It is today a charter village running its own water, electric and sewer utilities, and it is the birthplace of Antarctic scientist Paul Siple, who as an Eagle Scout joined Admiral Richard Byrd's first Antarctic expedition and went on to coin the term "wind chill factor."

Settled 1845, platted 1845, incorporated 1875.

Where the name comes from

Named after Montpelier, Vermont.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail or treaty site specific to Montpelier itself is recorded in the sources we checked. The village sits on the St. Joseph River, a Maumee tributary that rises in northern Williams County; the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids had carried Indian title to this stretch of northwestern Ohio to the United States some three decades before Montpelier was platted in 1845.

Stories

The Eagle Scout Who Named the Wind Chill

Paul Siple was born in Montpelier in 1908 before his family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, where he earned Eagle Scout rank with 59 merit badges. In 1928, at nineteen, he was chosen from thousands of applicants as the Boy Scout representative on Admiral Richard E. Byrd's first Antarctic expedition, sailing south aboard the City of New York -- becoming, by one common telling, the first Eagle Scout ever to reach Antarctica. He kept returning: over a career spanning decades he took part in several more Byrd-era and later Antarctic expeditions, and in 1956-57 served as the first scientific leader of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station during the International Geophysical Year. His most lasting contribution to everyday life came from fieldwork with fellow researcher Charles F. Passel, whose experiments on how fast water froze in the polar wind produced the wind chill factor, a measurement now printed in every winter weather forecast. Siple later served as the first U.S. science attache to Australia and New Zealand and received the National Geographic Society's Hubbard Medal in 1958; several Antarctic features carry his name today.

49,317 days of records, 1891-09-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
