How Edgerton began
Edgerton was platted in 1854 by Charles Pratt where the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana (Air Line) railroad crossed the St. Joseph River in St. Joseph Township, and, according to Wikipedia, takes its name from Alfred P. Edgerton, the land agent and congressman who had managed the American Land Company's and Hicks Land Company's lands from Hicksville since 1837 and sold 140,000 acres to settlers. A post office opened in 1854, a woolen factory started in the early 1860s, a weekly newspaper in 1875, and the village was incorporated December 4, 1865. Railroad workers once broke up a Baptist meeting here and were routed in a brawl. Edgerton had 1,043 residents in 1900, a graded school, a Catholic church and lodges of the Odd Fellows, Pythias and Masons.
Settled 1854, platted 1854, incorporated 1865-12-04, by Charles Pratt.
Where the name comes from
Wikipedia says the village is named for Alfred Peck Edgerton (1813-1897), a land agent who served in Congress from 1851 to 1855. Shinn's 1905 county history says Alfred P. Edgerton never legally lived in Williams County but contributed so much to its early affairs that its history is incomplete without him: from 1837 he managed the American Land Company and the Hicks Land Company from Hicksville, disposing of 140,000 acres to actual settlers by 1852, and served as state senator (1845-47) and congressman (1851-55). Shinn does not himself say the village was named for him.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail or treaty site specific to Edgerton itself is recorded in the sources checked. The village sits on the St. Joseph River, a Maumee tributary; the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids had carried Indian title to this stretch of northwestern Ohio to the United States nearly four decades before Edgerton was platted in 1854.
Timeline
- — Alfred P. Edgerton takes over management of the American Land Company and Hicks Land Company from Hicksville; by 1852, when the companies' affairs are wound up, he has sold 140,000 acres to settlers.
- — Charles Pratt plats Edgerton at the crossing of the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad and the St. Joseph River; a post office opens the same year.
- — While the Air Line railroad is being built, a Baptist meeting at a log schoolhouse near the village is broken up by a dozen or more railroad hands; the preacher's friends, among them Alexander and Tobias Wright, John Gnagy and the Bowersoxes, rout them in a fight.
- — John L. Terpening, born in Cayuga County, New York in 1835, opens a jewelry store in Edgerton; he is postmaster from 1870 to 1885, township clerk five years and mayor, and Civil War draft enrolling officer.
- — A woolen factory is started in Edgerton in the early 1860s and does a thriving business for years; Joseph Spindler starts a tannery soon after.
- — Williams County Commissioners incorporate Edgerton as a village after 41 residents petition for it.
- — The Edgerton Weekly is established in August by H. A. Granberry and J. R. Fusselman; it becomes the Edgerton Herald under Sardis R. Williams in 1877 and ends in the summer of 1882.
- — The census counts 1,043 residents, 76 more than in 1890; Shinn describes Edgerton as a busy trading point with stores that would do credit to a larger place, a graded school, a Catholic church with resident priest, Disciples and German Lutheran congregations and lodges of the Odd Fellows, Pythias, Masons and the G.A.R.
- — A Grand Army of the Republic memorial to the village's Civil War veterans is placed on Michigan Avenue.
- — Edgerton's water treatment plant is built; a 2022 engineering review found most of its major process components, including ion exchange units, valves and pumps, still original.
Stories
The Land Agent's Town
Alfred Peck Edgerton never lived in the village that carries his name. Born in New York in 1813, he moved to Ohio in 1837 to manage the American Land Company, surveying and selling settlement land across the northern part of the state, and it was that work -- not personal residence -- that, according to Wikipedia, put his name on the new railroad town platted at the St. Joseph River crossing in 1854. Edgerton went on to a public career far from the village: two terms in Congress from 1851 to 1855, then, in 1857, a move to Fort Wayne, Indiana to run the Wabash and Erie Canal, and finally an appointment by President Grover Cleveland to chair the U.S. Civil Service Commission from 1885 to 1889. He died in Hicksville, Ohio, in 1897, eighty-four years old, having spent his career naming and developing towns he mostly passed through rather than settled.
A meeting broken up by the railroad hands
In 1854, while the Air Line railroad was being built through St. Joseph Township, the Rev. Weaver held Baptist services in a log schoolhouse on the site where the Evangelical church later stood, a mile and a quarter north of what is now Edgerton. One Sabbath afternoon a dozen or more of the men employed on the road came to the meeting, Shinn says, intending to cause a row, and began to disturb the preacher. He remonstrated without effect, and their behavior went beyond the endurance of the citizens, so the meeting stopped and the fight began: Alexander and Tobias Wright, John Gnagy, John W. and David Bowersox, John Skelton, Benjamin F. Cornell and others on the preacher's side, and the railroad hands in their own cause. The struggle was terrific, and finally the friends of good order and the gospel prevailed; most of the railroad men were fearfully battered and routed, and though they threatened to return in great force they never appeared. Shinn adds that every denomination known to Christendom held services at that schoolhouse in those years.
