How Bryan began
Bryan was platted in 1840 by John A. Bryan, who gave the village his own name, and was incorporated in 1841. It beat the older village of Montpelier in a contest for the Williams County seat on the strength of its greater commercial and industrial weight, and the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway reached it in 1869, cementing that lead. In the twentieth century Bryan became a manufacturing town -- home to the Van Camp Packing Company's milk condensory and, from 1906, the Spangler Candy Company, maker of Dum-Dums lollipops and roughly 45 percent of the candy canes sold in the United States today. It reincorporated as a city in 1941 and remains the county seat and only city in Williams County.
Settled 1840, platted 1840, incorporated 1841 (village); 1941 (city), by John A. Bryan.
Where the name comes from
Named for its founder, John A. Bryan, who platted the village in 1840.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail or treaty site specific to the ground that became Bryan is recorded in the sources consulted. The 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids had already carried Indian title to this part of northwestern Ohio to the United States more than two decades before Bryan was platted in 1840. The county's Native history includes the prehistoric Nettle Lake Mound Group in the county's northwest corner.
Timeline
- — Williams County is created by the Ohio Legislature, twenty years before Bryan itself is platted.
- — John A. Bryan plats the village of Bryan and it wins the contest with Montpelier to become the Williams County seat, on the strength of its greater commercial and industrial importance and higher population.
- — Bryan is incorporated as a village.
- — The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway begins service through Bryan.
- — The current Williams County Courthouse, designed by the Toledo firm E. O. Fallis and Company in the Romanesque Revival style, is built at Main and High Streets, the third courthouse on the site.
- — Arthur G. Spangler founds Spangler Manufacturing Company in Bryan, initially making baking powder and spices; it becomes the Spangler Candy Company in 1920.
- — Aeronaut Stanley I. Vaughn flies a hydrogen balloon over Bryan's homecoming celebration, an event documented in a pair of surviving postcards.
- — Bryan reincorporates as a city.
- — The jet-powered rail car M-497 'Black Beetle' sets an American rail speed record of 183.68 mph on the line between Stryker and Bryan, a record that still stands for U.S. conventional rail.
Stories
From Baking Powder to Dum-Dums
Arthur G. Spangler did not set out to make candy. In 1906 he paid $450 for the Gold Leaf Baking Powder Company of Defiance and moved it to Bryan, where it made baking soda, corn starch and spices under the name Spangler Manufacturing Company. It was his brother Ernest, who joined the firm in 1908, who suggested branching into candy; the company's first confection, the Cocoanut Ball, appeared in 1911, and the business was renamed the Spangler Candy Company in 1920. The turning point came in 1953, when Spangler bought the Dum Dum Pops brand from the Akron Candy Company, followed a year later by the A-Z Christmas Candy Cane Company. Today the Bryan plant turns out more than 12 million Dum-Dums a day and roughly 45 percent of all the candy canes sold in the United States, and the company that began by selling baking powder door to door is Bryan's second-largest employer.
A Balloon Over the Homecoming
On August 12, 1909, Bryan held a homecoming celebration, and the featured attraction was a hydrogen balloon flown by Stanley I. Vaughn. Local photographers turned the event into a pair of postcards -- one titled 'Just Before the Flight,' showing the balloon straining at its lines with a crowd gathered close, and a second, 'Vaughn's First Flight,' showing the balloon already high above the rooftops of the town. Balloon ascensions were a staple of small-town fairs and homecomings in this period, equal parts entertainment and civic spectacle, and Bryan's own newspaper and postcard printers thought Vaughn's flight worth documenting twice over. Both postcards survive today in the Columbus Metropolitan Library's collection.

Mostly estimated. Only 15% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Bryan - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,879 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
