How Hocking County began
Hocking County was organized by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1818, from parts of Athens, Fairfield and Ross counties, and named for the Hocking River, itself a rendering of a Delaware (Lenape) word usually translated "bottle river," describing the bottle-shaped narrows and falls on the stream's upper reaches northwest of Lancaster. Its seat, Logan, had already been laid out on June 27, 1816, by Governor Thomas Worthington and named for the Mingo leader Logan (Tachnechdorus), in country the Wyandot had held, with a considerable town of theirs, remembered in the name of Oldtown Creek, a mile below the site. The county's steep, sandstone-gorge country -- now known nationally as the Hocking Hills, with Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Rock House and Conkles Hollow -- carries some of the oldest documented human use in the region, its deep rock shelters used by indigenous people for centuries, from the Adena mound-building era into the historic Shawnee, Wyandot and Delaware presence of the 1700s. After settlement, the county's economy ran first on subsistence farming and the Hocking Canal (completed 1840), then on Hocking Valley coal and iron, whose 1884-85 miners' strike was one of the largest labor conflicts in Gilded Age Ohio; the same gorge country that fed sawmills and coal mines became, beginning with state land purchases in the 1920s and Civilian Conservation Corps work in the 1930s, one of Ohio's principal tourist destinations.
Logan was laid out by Governor Thomas Worthington on June 27, 1816, on the Hocking River about a mile above the site of a Wyandot town remembered in the name of Oldtown Creek, and became Hocking County's seat when the county organized in 1818; it was incorporated as a city in 1839. Worthington named the town for the Mingo chief Logan. The Hocking Canal, completed to Logan by 1840, and later the Hocking Valley Railway, made Logan a shipping point for the county's farm produce, coal and iron, and its population grew from about 250 in 1825 to 2,666 by 1880 and 3,119 by 1890.

How did Hocking County get its name?
The county takes its name from the Hocking River, an English rendering of a Delaware (Lenape) word -- given variously as Hokhokken, Hokhochen or Hockhocking -- meaning "bottle" or "bottle river." The name describes the river's upper course northwest of present Lancaster, where the stream runs narrow and straight above a roughly twenty-foot fall, then widens sharply below it into a shape that, seen from above, resembles the neck and body of a bottle.
