Life story

Horace Biddle was born in 1811 on the Hocking County frontier. The statesman Thomas Ewing advised him to study law and found him a place in another lawyer's office, and he was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1839.

He later moved to Indiana, took part in the 1850 state constitutional convention, and served as circuit judge in Carroll County, Indiana, in 1847-1852 and 1860-1872. From 1875 to 1881 he sat on the Indiana Supreme Court.

Biddle was also a poet, praised by Washington Irving, and wrote on literary theory and the physics of music and sound. In old age he lived mostly alone on a 17-acre island in the Wabash River and died in Logansport in 1900.
