How Green Township, Hocking County began

Green Township was organized in 1825 in the eastern part of Hocking County, Ohio, along the Hocking River and the route the Hocking Canal later followed. It takes in the western edge of Logan, the county seat, and the company-built mining town of Haydenville in its southern end. Its history is tied to coal, clay, and brick manufacturing rather than to any single founder or platted town center. Nelsonville, sometimes assumed to belong here because of its canal and coal history, is actually in York Township, Athens County, not Green Township. Today the township is a mix of rural land and the small unincorporated community of Haydenville, preserved largely intact as a National Register historic mining town.

Incorporated Organized as a township in 1825.

Where the name comes from

No source found that documents why this township was named Green. Ohio has sixteen townships named Green; none of the sources consulted give a specific naming rationale for this one.

Before the town

No source consulted records a Native American village, mound, trail, or treaty cession specific to Green Township itself. The Hocking River, which forms the township's core geography, carries a name of Lenape (Delaware) origin, reported to mean 'bottle river,' reflecting the presence of Delaware people along the river system that runs through this township before Ohio statehood. Broader Native American history for Hocking County (Adena/Hopewell, Fort Ancient, Wyandot, Shawnee, Mingo) is recorded at the county level, not this township specifically.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware).

Timeline

  1. — Hocking County was organized (March 1) from parts of Athens, Fairfield, and Ross counties; Green Township lies within it.
  2. — Green Township was organized as one of Hocking County's civil townships.
  3. — Haydenville was established in southern Green Township, named for landowner Peter Hayden; a post office opened there in 1870.
  4. — Peter Hayden established the Haydenville Mining and Manufacturing Company, which came to own all housing and stores in the town and paid workers in company scrip.
  5. — The William H. Woodruff House, a brick residence southeast of Logan on Linton Road in Green Township, was built.
  6. — National Fireproofing Company bought the Haydenville operation and, for the first time, allowed residents to purchase their own homes, ending nearly a century of company-town control.
  7. — Haydenville Historic Town, more than 120 contributing buildings on about 20 acres, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (listed March 20, 1973).
  8. — The William H. Woodruff House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (July 29, 1982).

Stories

A company town that outlasted the century

Haydenville, in the southern end of Green Township along the Hocking River near U.S. Route 33, grew up around clay and coal works started by Columbus businessman Peter Hayden in the 1850s. In 1882 Hayden formalized the operation as the Haydenville Mining and Manufacturing Company, and the company came to own essentially everything in town: the houses miners and brickworkers lived in, the stores they bought from, and the scrip they were paid in, which was worthless outside the company's own shops. Losing your job could mean losing your home in the same stroke, since residency and employment were tied together. That arrangement held for the better part of a century, only ending in the early 1960s when the National Fireproofing Company bought the works and, for the first time, let residents buy the houses they lived in. Because so little of the original town was ever redeveloped, Haydenville was recognized in 1973 as a National Register historic district covering more than 120 buildings, one of the more intact company-town landscapes left in Ohio.

The Nelsonville mix-up

Nelsonville has a vivid history: an 1814 founding by Daniel Nelson, an 1838 incorporation under first mayor Charles Cable, Confederate raiders burning canal boats there during Morgan's Raid in 1863, and an 1888 claim to the first citywide electric street lighting west of the Alleghenies. All of that is real Nelsonville history, but Nelsonville itself sits in York Township, Athens County, not in Green Township, Hocking County. The two places are neighbors along the old Hocking Canal corridor, but Green Township's own record does not include Nelsonville's story.
