How Batavia Township, Clermont County began

Batavia Township, a little north of the county's center, was created out of parts of the older Williamsburgh and Ohio townships, split along the East Fork of the Little Miami River, and takes its name from the county seat, Batavia, that sits within it. Its first home was built in the fall of 1797 by Ezekiel Dimmitt, a Virginia-born settler who had prospected the East Fork bottomlands the year before; Dimmitt went on to build a stone house in 1813, a tannery, the county's first stone Methodist church in 1819, and, by his own hand as builder, the county courthouse and jails once Batavia became the seat of government in 1824. The township's other early neighborhood was Olive Branch, settled by Pennsylvania farmer Andrew Apple before 1798. It today holds two National Register-listed prehistoric archaeological sites, the East Fork Site and the Elk Lick Road Mound.

Settled 1796, incorporated 1815, by Ezekiel Dimmitt, first settler (cabin built fall 1797); township organized 1815 from parts of Williamsburgh and Ohio townships.

Where the name comes from

The township takes its name from Batavia, the county seat within its borders, which the Ohio legislature established as Clermont County's permanent seat of government on February 24, 1824. The origin of the name "Batavia" itself is not recorded here; it is a historic Latin name for the Netherlands, used for many American towns in this period.

Before the town

No mound, earthwork or named historic-era village is recorded within Batavia Township, but the township does hold two archaeological sites carrying National Register of Historic Places listings: the East Fork Site, south of Batavia, and the Elk Lick Road Mound, northwest of Bantam; their cultural period and type beyond "prehistoric" are not given here. The 1880 county history preserves one specific, non-violent encounter from the township's settlement years: in the spring of 1798, with her husband and brother away tending a leased cornfield fifteen miles off at Columbia, Phoebe (Gest) Dimmitt was alone at the family's new cabin on the East Fork when a party of six Native men passed close by in the afternoon, appearing to look the cabin over; no contact or violence followed, but combined with the wolves howling that night it left her badly frightened, and her husband and brother, independently uneasy, returned home to find her nearly overcome with fear. No nation is named for this party.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — Ezekiel Dimmitt, a young Virginia-born settler then living in Kentucky, comes to Ohio prospecting for land and, with James Gest, selects a fine tract on the East Fork of the Little Miami later known as the Duckwall bottoms.
  2. — November 3: Dimmitt marries Phoebe Gest; that fall the couple, with James and John Gest, build the township's first cabin, with a stick chimney and puncheon floor, on the East Fork.
  3. — The oldest highway in the township is located by order of the Court of Quarter Sessions of Hamilton County; its course, across the East Fork below Thomas Marsh's house, is little changed and remains the principal east-west thoroughfare.
  4. — Before this date, Pennsylvania-born Andrew Apple settles a 2,100-acre tract at and near present Olive Branch, in the western part of the township.
  5. — Charles Robinson, a Marylander by way of Virginia and Kentucky, arrives at Ezekiel Dimmitt's cabin; a cabin is built beside it for his family, and the next spring they move to a farm on Lucy's Run four miles south of Batavia.
  6. — Mary Robinson, the family's oldest daughter, is lost on a snowy night riding to the Mitchell home about twelve miles away; she walks back and forth all night to keep from freezing while wolves howl around her stamping horse, and at dawn reaches the Mitchell home and collapses.
  7. — Ezekiel Dimmitt builds a stone house on his land, a prominent local landmark for decades, along with a tannery.
  8. — Batavia is organized as a civil township out of Williamsburgh and Ohio townships; the township records from then until 1848 are lost.
  9. — Captain Charles Moore buys the Moore's Mills site, the oldest mill site in the county (selected for Generals Taylor and Lytle by millwright Peter Wilson), and builds a better saw mill with a small run of stones; in 1840 he and his sons build the present grist mill.
  10. — Dimmitt erects the old stone Methodist Episcopal church at Batavia; he and his wife had belonged to the first Methodist class organized in Ohio, formed by the Rev. Francis McCormick at Milford in 1797.
  11. — February 24: Batavia, within the township, becomes the permanent seat of Clermont County government; Dimmitt is among the builders of the resulting courthouse and jail.
  12. — The Olive Branch post office is established with Charles Bohn as the first postmaster, serving a hamlet that grew up on Daniel Apple's farm along the Cincinnati turnpike.
  13. — The Mount Holly post office is established on the Ohio turnpike with David Doughty as postmaster.
  14. — James Davidson lays out the hamlet of Maywood on the Cincinnati & Eastern Railroad; 16 lots in all, with few houses and one store.
  15. — The township and the village buy 25 acres adjoining the old Citizens' Cemetery to make a general burial place; in the township are three toll turnpikes and two narrow-gauge railways.
  16. — Ford's Batavia Transmission plant closes; in 2019 the former village of Amelia is dissolved.
  17. — The 2020 census counts 27,660 residents in Batavia Township.

Stories

A frightened night on the East Fork

In the spring of 1798, not long after Ezekiel and Phoebe Dimmitt had built the first cabin in what became Batavia Township, the household's few acres of corn near the cabin were not enough to live on, so the men also worked a leased cornfield fifteen miles away at Columbia, reached by blazed paths through unbroken forest. When the Columbia corn needed tending, Ezekiel and his brother-in-law James Gest left, and Phoebe Dimmitt stayed behind alone at a cabin seven miles from its nearest neighbor. On the first afternoon of their absence, six Native men passed close by the cabin, moving slowly and looking it over as if counting how many people lived there; nothing came of the encounter, but that night the wolves howled without letting up, and by morning Phoebe was, in the county historian's words, "nearly beside herself with fear." Thirty miles away at Columbia, James Gest was seized with an unaccountable conviction that his sister was in trouble and talked Ezekiel into turning back for home; when they reached the cabin, Phoebe had barely enough strength left to lift the latch. She recovered, and by all accounts remained a notably brave woman for the rest of her long pioneer life, but her husband and brother never again left her alone at the cabin.

Mrs. Robinson and the beacon on the Kentucky shore

Charles Robinson and his wife, a Methodist couple who came from Kentucky in 1806 and held early preaching in their house, raised a family of eight on a farm on Lucy's Run. Mrs. Robinson had some medical knowledge and, by the 1880 county history's account, so much success in treating the sick that people came for her help from many miles around. Twice she was called across the Ohio River into Kentucky, crossing at night guided by a small beacon fire on the far shore. She often went alone along a trace marked only by blazed trees, with no house in sight for many miles, and was said to be mighty in the Scriptures as well, bringing healing to soul as well as body. She died July 18, 1835, aged 67, and her husband on August 13, 1846, aged 83. Their eldest daughter Mary, who as a young woman spent a snowy night walking in circles among howling wolves, became the wife of William Weaver.

Andrew Apple's 2,100 acres

Andrew Apple came from Pennsylvania some time before 1798 and settled a tract of 2,100 acres at and near the later hamlet of Olive Branch in the western part of the township. He brought with him many implements to lighten the labor of a new country, owned one of the first wagons in the county, and was credited with the finest team. He raised eleven children and gave each of them 150 acres in the Olive Branch neighborhood as they came of age, so that at one time the Apple family there was very numerous, though most removed to Indiana as the country filled up. He died about 1817 and lies in the Olive Branch Cemetery. His youngest son Daniel, born in 1794, kept the homestead until 1871, and the hamlet of Olive Branch grew up on the farm he cleared, without ever being platted: lots were sold off the farm on either side of the turnpike as people asked for them.
