How Goshen Township, Clermont County began
Goshen Township, along the county's northern line, was set off from Miami Township in 1819 and named for Goshen, New York, the home region of some of its early settlers. Its first permanent settler was Jacob Myers, a Pennsylvania-born boatman who reached the township in 1798 by way of Kentucky and the Little Miami settlements, clearing a farm on a branch of O'Bannon Creek two miles south of the present village of Goshen; his son John, born in 1799, is recorded as the first white child born in the township. The township grew slowly around scattered farms drained by O'Bannon Creek, with the Frybarger, Stroup, Roudebush and Weaver families following Myers into the area in the years after 1800. It holds one National Register-listed prehistoric archaeological site, the Devanney Site, west of the village of Goshen.

Where the name comes from
Goshen Township takes its name from Goshen, New York, in memory of the home region of some of the families who settled here; the 1880 county history records the naming fact but does not name a specific individual credited with choosing it.
Before the town
No mound, earthwork or named historic-era village specific to Goshen Township is recorded in the sources checked, apart from the Devanney Site, a National Register-listed prehistoric archaeological site west of Goshen village; no nomination form was opened for it, so its culture and date beyond "prehistoric" could not be confirmed here. The 1880 county history's account of Jacob Myers' 1798 settlement describes him traveling to his new purchase "through a dense wilderness inhabited by wild animals and Indians," armed with rifle, tomahawk and hunting knife, but records no specific encounter, conflict or named Native individual within the township; the danger is presented as ambient rather than documented. Stories
A face-to-face meeting on the creek
Jacob Myers, the first settler of Goshen Township, earned early cash working for a neighboring farmer five miles off, walking the distance both ways rather than spare the time to catch his pony. One morning, running late, he decided to ride instead, but could not find the animal in the small clearing around his cabin. Following the sound of its bell up the creek, bridle in hand, he came around a large fallen oak to find a black bear reared up on its hind legs, forepaws braced on the same log, the two of them face to face at a few feet's distance. Only then did it strike him that in his hurry he had left his gun, tomahawk, knife and dog behind at the cabin. With nothing else for it, he decided his only chance was to frighten the animal first, and sprang forward with a loud whoop, snapping his bridle in the bear's face -- which worked: the bear fled at a dead run, and Myers, by his own later account, could never retell the story without breaking into a laugh at how the encounter had ended. It became a standing joke in the family for the rest of his life.
German and English roots, one village
The village of Goshen grew up around the same 1798 farm Jacob Myers cleared on O'Bannon Creek, but Myers was only the first of a wave: the settlers who built up the surrounding township in the years that followed came from both German and English backgrounds, many of them Revolutionary War veterans who had made their way down the Ohio River from western Pennsylvania looking for farmland of their own. That mixed heritage, and the township's position roughly midway between Milford and Blanchester along what became Ohio State Route 28, shaped a farming community that grew only slowly across the 19th century -- the village itself numbered barely 700 residents even two centuries after Myers first broke ground.
