How Miami Township, Clermont County began
Miami Township, in the northwestern corner of Clermont County along the Little Miami River, holds the honor of the county's first permanent settlement: Colonel Thomas Paxton and his family, arriving from Kentucky by way of Wayne's 1794 campaign against the Northwestern Indian tribes, settled about 1200 acres near present Loveland in 1794-96. It was organized in 1801 as O'Bannon Township, for surveyor John O'Bannon, before being renamed for the Little Miami River it borders. Early settlers included the Methodist ministers Francis McCormick, who formed the first Methodist class in Ohio at his cabin above Milford in 1797, and Philip Gatch, a Maryland-born circuit rider who was, with William Walters, one of the first two native-born Methodist preachers in America. Today the township holds the villages of Miamiville, Day Heights and Mount Repose along with portions of Loveland and Milford, and includes the Gatch Site, a National Register-listed Hopewell-era village on the old Gatch farm.

Where the name comes from
The township was first organized in 1801 as O'Bannon Township, honoring John O'Bannon, the surveyor who laid out government land entries in Clermont County's southern townships in the 1790s and for whom O'Bannon Creek, a Little Miami tributary crossing the township, is also named. The name was changed to Miami not long afterward, for the Little Miami River that forms the township's western boundary.
Before the town
The Gatch Site, a roughly 75-acre Middle Woodland (Hopewell-era) village and burial ground on the Little Miami River near Milford, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits within Miami Township; excavations there found firepits, campsites and burials. The 1880 Rockey and Bancroft county history separately records a large prehistoric enclosure "near Milford, on the farm of Rev. George Gatch" -- an 18-acre, two-part, trapezoid-shaped work with corner openings and outlying low mounds, judged by its defensible, spring-fed site to have served a sacred rather than a purely agricultural purpose -- almost certainly the same Woodland-period complex now formally listed as the Gatch Site. The same source records an examined sacrificial mound on the farm of G. I. Irving in Miami Township. None of these works is tied by any source to a named historic nation. In the historic period the Miami nation (Twightwee in their own language) considered the Little and Great Miami valleys, including this township, their original homeland, and disputed the northwestern part of Clermont County with the Shawnee before withdrawing farther northwest after a French and Indian War-era siege near Piqua; the Shawnee then held the ground until the Treaty of Greenville's 1795 cession opened it to survey and settlement. A local, undated account preserved in the 1880 county history describes a Native man killed by settlers of the Riggs family near a gravelly hill by John Kugler's distillery, close to Covalt's Station on the Hamilton County side of the river, in the early 1790s -- one of several such encounters remembered by Miami Township's pioneer families along the unsettled Little Miami frontier of that decade.

- — May 28: surveyor and speculator John Nancarrow has the 230-acre tract that becomes Milford surveyed on military warrants, intending to found a future metropolis on the site; commercial reverses instead force him to sell.
- — Returning from service in Gen. Anthony Wayne's campaign against the Northwestern tribes, Col. Thomas Paxton is so struck by the country near present Loveland that he arranges to purchase about 1,200 acres there; he and most of his family relocate from Kentucky over the following two years, founding the first permanent settlement in Clermont County.
- — The Rev. Francis McCormick, a Revolutionary War veteran who served under Lafayette at Yorktown, settles above Milford on a 1,000-acre survey; the following year, 1797, he forms the first Methodist class in the state of Ohio at his cabin.

Stories
The preacher who could not stay put
The Rev. Philip Gatch, born near Baltimore in 1751 to an Episcopalian family, was converted by Methodist preaching in 1772 and began preaching himself the very next year. In 1774 he and William Walters became the first native-born Americans to serve as Methodist circuit preachers, riding a route that in that era might cover hundreds of miles of largely unbroken forest between scattered log-cabin congregations, at a time when the denomination in America was still led almost entirely by English-born missionaries. Gatch carried that itinerant life west, settling in Miami Township on land adjoining that of fellow Methodist pioneer Francis McCormick, whose 1797 class-meeting at his own cabin above Milford is remembered as the first Methodist class formed anywhere in Ohio. Gatch's own farm near Milford later gave its name to the Gatch Site, the prehistoric Hopewell-era village and burial ground now listed on the National Register of Historic Places -- so that the same ground carries, a thousand years and more apart, both the earliest known occupation of the Little Miami valley and one of the earliest organized Protestant congregations north of the Ohio River.
