How Loveland began

Loveland grew from the first permanent settlement in Clermont County: Colonel Thomas Paxton's 1794-96 purchase of about 1,200 acres near the Little Miami River, a tract that passed by sale through several owners before Colonel William Ramsey platted the town of Paxton there in November 1849 and, four months later, the adjoining town of Loveland, named for storekeeper and postmaster James Loveland. The two plats were later recognized as one town, incorporated as a village on May 16, 1876, and chartered as a city in 1961. Uniquely for an Ohio municipality, Loveland straddles three counties -- Clermont, Hamilton and Warren -- with the Little Miami River marking the Clermont-Hamilton line through its historic downtown. The town grew into a busy rail junction in the 19th and 20th centuries; its abandoned rail corridor became the Little Miami Scenic Trail bike path in the 1980s, and the city is also known today for the local legend of the "Loveland Frog."

Settled 1794, platted 1850-03-19, incorporated 1876-05-16, by Col. William Ramsey (platted the town of Loveland, adjoining his own town of Paxton platted 1849, on land first settled by Col. Thomas Paxton in 1794-96).

Where the name comes from

The town is named for James Loveland, who kept a general store and post office near the railroad tracks in the developing downtown; despite appearances, the name comes from his surname and has no connection to the word "love." It replaced the name of the adjoining plat, Paxton, laid out a few months earlier by the same proprietor, Col. William Ramsey, on land the Paxton family had settled two generations before.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or documented encounter specific to the town site of Loveland was found in the sources searched. The land was settled in 1794-96 by Col. Thomas Paxton, recently returned from Gen. Anthony Wayne's campaign against the Northwestern Indian confederacy, on ground within Miami Township that the Miami nation had considered part of its original homeland in the Little and Great Miami valleys before withdrawing northwest and ceding the area to Shawnee use; the Treaty of Greenville, concluded the year before Paxton's settlement, formally opened the region to survey and purchase. The wider area's Native history includes the Gatch Site, a National Register-listed Hopewell-era village a short distance away near Milford.

Timeline

  1. — Col. Thomas Paxton, returning from service in Wayne's campaign, arranges to purchase about 1,200 acres near the future Loveland town site, and his family relocates from Kentucky over the following two years -- the first permanent settlement in Clermont County.
  2. — July 10: the Paxton tract's later owners, the Carrington brothers, sell the land to Benjamin Butterworth, a Warren County pioneer.
  3. — May 6: Samuel C. Butterworth sells 189 acres of the tract to Col. William Ramsey.
  4. — November 17: Ramsey lays out the town of Paxton on the site.
  5. — March 19: Ramsey lays out the adjoining town of Loveland, named for storekeeper James Loveland; the two plats are later treated as a single town.
  6. — May 16: Loveland is incorporated as a village, with its municipal limits extended into Hamilton and Warren Counties by those counties' own authorities; the first village election follows on July 28, electing John H. Law mayor.
  7. — March: the great Ohio flood, one of the worst in state history, devastates Loveland along the Little Miami River.

Stories

Two plats become one town

Loveland's founding was a real-estate decision made twice in the same year. In November 1849, Col. William Ramsey, who had bought nearly 190 acres of the old Paxton family tract along the Little Miami River, laid out a town he named Paxton, honoring the family whose 1794 settlement there had been the first permanent one in Clermont County. Only four months later, in March 1850, Ramsey platted an adjoining tract and called it Loveland, after James Loveland, who ran a store and post office near the railroad line then being built through the valley. The two plats grew together as a single settlement and were treated from early on as one town, though it was the newer name, Loveland, that stuck. The town's site kept expanding piecemeal for decades afterward: a resurvey in 1863 established new lot lines, and landowners in neighboring Hamilton and Warren Counties platted their own additions once the railroad made the crossroads valuable, ultimately spreading the town across all three counties' territory around the river.
