How Union Township, Clermont County began

Union Township was organized in December 1811, carved out of the older Ohio Township in the western part of Clermont County along the East Fork of the Little Miami River. Its first concentrated settlement was Withamsville, begun about 1800 by the Reverend Maurice Witham, a Maine-born Baptist minister who patented a thousand-acre tract there in 1803; Mount Carmel, Tobasco and other small crossroads hamlets followed through the 19th century as farming, milling and chair-making communities. Today it is the largest and most populous township in Clermont County, its farmland and hamlets long since absorbed into the eastern Cincinnati suburbs, and it is home to the headquarters of Total Quality Logistics. Its sole confirmed National Register listing is the circa-1825 Pfarr Log House on Shayler Run; several other historic houses long associated with the township's 45244 ZIP code turn out, on checking, to stand across the county line in Hamilton County.

Settled 1800, incorporated 1811-12, by Rev. Maurice Witham (Withamsville settlement, 1800); township organized from Ohio Township, December 1811.

Where the name comes from

No source found explains why the township was named "Union" specifically; the 1880 county history describes its 1811 organization from part of Ohio Township without recording the reasoning behind the name. "Union" was a common patriotic township name across early Ohio and is not documented here as referring to any particular local event or merger.

Before the town

No National Register-listed prehistoric site and no documented historic-era village, battle or named encounter is recorded within Union Township. But the 1880 Rockey and Bancroft county history, describing the Mound-Builder earthworks it had personally surveyed across Clermont County, does place three prehistoric enclosures within the township: two ten-acre square enclosures near Perin's Mills, on the farms of Ira Perin and William Malott, their walls originally about five feet high with an opening at each corner and a low mound outside each opening; and a fifteen-acre rhomboid enclosure on Ezekiel Edwards' farm near Elstun's Station, similar in form and construction. The same source records prehistoric cemeteries in the township on the farm of Oliver Perin and on Moses Elstun's farm at a place called "Sand Ridge," where skeletons were found about two feet down in stone-lined cists, along with a large cemetery of unclear age at the mouth of Dry Run on Daniel Turner's farm. None of these works is assigned to a named historic nation; 19th-century settlers and county historians alike had no continuous memory linking them to the historic-era Shawnee, Miami, Wyandot or other nations who hunted and traveled the wider Little Miami valley region before the 1795 Treaty of Greenville cession. The 1880 account of Union Township's own settlement, beginning around 1800, mentions only the wild animals -- panthers, bears and wolves -- pioneers like Daniel Durham found in its forest, with no record of Native residents still living in the township at that date. The nearest documented historic-era encounter is the 1792 Battle of Grassy Run, in what is now Jackson Township well to the east.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami, Hopewell culture.

Stories

A minister's thousand acres becomes a town

Union Township's first real settlement was less a village that grew up organically than the working-out of one family's land claim. Around 1800 the Reverend Maurice Witham, a Baptist preacher born in Maine, brought his family to occupy a thousand-acre tract he had secured in what would become the township's southern section, and by the time his patent was formally issued in November 1803 the surrounding neighborhood was already known as Witham's settlement, later Withamsville. Witham was an original member of the Ten-Mile Baptist Church and shared pulpit duties with the Reverend William Robb, a Methodist preacher in neighboring Pierce Township, and the community he anchored grew steadily through the early 1800s as families with names like Bennett, Prickett and Beasley took up land nearby. When Union Township was formally organized from the older Ohio Township in December 1811, Withamsville was already its natural center, and it remained the township's principal settlement through the 19th century even as newer crossroads communities -- Mount Carmel with its stores, taverns and chair shops; Tobasco with its Methodist Protestant congregation -- grew up around it on the roads leading toward Cincinnati.
