How Batavia began

Batavia was first settled in the fall of 1797 by Ezekiel Dimmitt, a Virginia-born pioneer who had prospected the East Fork bottomlands the year before; the town itself was not platted until October 24, 1814, when George Ely, who had purchased the underlying survey, laid it out and possibly named it for Batavia, New York. The Ohio legislature made Batavia the permanent seat of Clermont County government on February 24, 1824, after the county's first two seats, Williamsburgh and New Richmond, and the village formally incorporated on February 10, 1842. Dimmitt himself, by then a leading citizen, helped build the resulting courthouse and jail as well as the county's first stone Methodist church, erected in 1819.

Before the town

No mound, earthwork or documented historic-era Native village, encounter or battle specific to the village site of Batavia was found in the sources searched. The clearest Native-adjacent record from the immediate area is a non-violent encounter from the township's earliest settlement: in the spring of 1798, with her husband and brother away, Phoebe (Gest) Dimmitt, wife of the area's first settler Ezekiel Dimmitt, was alone at the family's new cabin on the East Fork when a party of six Native men passed close by, appearing to look the cabin over; no contact or violence followed.

Timeline

  1. — May 28: the survey underlying the future town of Batavia is made, including surveyor Capt. Francis Minnis.
  2. — Ezekiel Dimmitt, a Virginia-born pioneer, becomes the area's first settler, building a cabin near the East Fork of the Little Miami that fall.
  3. — Dimmitt builds a stone house on his land, a prominent local landmark, along with a tannery.
  4. — October 24: George Ely, who had purchased the underlying survey, formally plats the town of Batavia.
  5. — Dimmitt erects the old stone Methodist Episcopal church at Batavia.
  6. — February 24: the Ohio legislature makes Batavia the permanent seat of Clermont County government; the first court convenes there May 14 in a Methodist Episcopal church, and Dimmitt helps build the resulting courthouse and jail.
  7. — February 10: Batavia is formally incorporated as a village.

Stories

A courthouse town remade twice over

Batavia's rise to county seat in 1824 set the pattern for the next two centuries: government, not commerce, would be the village's steadiest business. The Norfolk and Western Railway's 1877 arrival briefly widened that base, carrying freight and passengers through town for nearly a century before the line closed in 1971. In the 20th century, Batavia Township's economy took a very different shape when Ford Motor Company built its Batavia Transmission plant nearby, a major employer that ran for decades before its 2009 closure. Through both the railroad's rise and fall and the arrival and departure of heavy industry, the county courthouse on Main Street, the institution Ezekiel Dimmitt himself helped raise in 1824, has remained the one constant reason Batavia continues to matter beyond its own borders.
