How Toledo began
Toledo grew from two rival paper towns at the mouth of the Maumee River, Port Lawrence and Vistula, which merged in 1833 and took the name Toledo -- for reasons no one alive can now say for certain -- to compete for the terminus of the Miami and Erie Canal. Ohio and the Michigan Territory both claimed the ground it sat on, and the almost bloodless 1835-36 Toledo War settled the border in Ohio's favor, with Michigan compensated by the Upper Peninsula; the city was incorporated in 1837 and the canal reached it in 1843. Glassmaker Edward Libbey moved his New England Glass Company to Toledo in 1888, and his partnership with inventor Michael Owens, whose automatic bottle machine and later Libbey-Owens sheet-glass process transformed the industry worldwide, made Toledo 'The Glass City.' In the twentieth century Willys-Overland's Jeep, born there during the Second World War, and Toledo's museum, zoo and university built out the city that today anchors northwestern Ohio.
Settled Port Lawrence platted 1817 at the mouth of Swan Creek on the Maumee; the rival town of Vistula platted to its north in the early 1830s, platted Port Lawrence and Vistula merged and took the name Toledo in 1833, incorporated 1837, as a city, by Port Lawrence and Vistula town proprietors; merger driven by competition for the Miami and Erie Canal terminus.
Where the name comes from
Why the merged town took the name Toledo, after the Spanish city, is not settled; Wikipedia's history of the city calls the choice 'buried in a welter of legends,' with rival stories crediting the writer Washington Irving, Major Benjamin Franklin Stickney's son Two Stickney, or Toledo merchant Willard J. Daniels, and no single account documented as fact.
Before the town
The mouth of the Maumee River, where Toledo now stands, was Odawa (Ottawa) ground through the eighteenth century: the war leader Egushawa, allied with the British through the Revolution and the Northwest Indian War, held a village at the river's mouth on the site of the future city, and Pontiac was reportedly born at the Maumee-Auglaize confluence upriver. Following General Anthony Wayne's victory at Fallen Timbers in August 1794, a few miles upriver in what is now Maumee, and the Treaty of Greenville the next year, the United States pressed for further cessions; on July 4, 1805 the Treaty of Fort Industry, signed by the Ottawa, Potawatomi, Ojibwe (Chippewa), Wyandot, Munsee, Lenape (Delaware) and Shawnee with US Indian agent Charles Jouett, opened the Connecticut Western Reserve's Firelands and land south of the 41st parallel to American settlement -- Toledo's own local tradition places the treaty ground at the mouth of Swan Creek, downtown, though Wikipedia's own account of the treaty calls the fort's exact site 'one of the enduring mysteries of the western frontier,' with no military record of a post by that name ever being built there. The Odawa continued to use the lower Maumee valley after 1805, and the last Maumee-area band, under Ottokee, grandson of Pontiac, left for Kansas in 1839, decades after Toledo's first American town plats went down on the same riverbank.

Stories
A war fought almost entirely on paper
In the spring of 1835, Ohio Governor Robert Lucas marched roughly six hundred armed militia to Perrysburg to make good Ohio's claim to a wedge of land along the Maumee that Michigan's young territorial governor, twenty-four-year-old Stevens T. Mason, also claimed for Michigan. Poor eighteenth-century surveying had left the border genuinely ambiguous, and both sides had real grievances, but the fighting that followed amounted to almost nothing: a April 26, 1835 skirmish remembered as the Battle of Phillips Corners saw Michigan militia fire into the air to scatter an Ohio survey crew and haul nine men off to jail, and the war's only wound came in July, when an Ohioan named Two Stickney stabbed a Michigan deputy sheriff with a penknife during an arrest. By December 1836 Michigan's militia bills and its exclusion from federal statehood funds forced a second convention at Ann Arbor -- held in such a cold snap, and with such doubtful legal standing, that it went down in memory as the 'Frostbitten Convention.' It accepted a trade that looked at the time like a loss for Michigan: Ohio kept Toledo, and Michigan took the largely unmapped Upper Peninsula instead. The copper and iron that turned up there within a decade made it, in hindsight, the better half of the bargain.
How a Massachusetts glassmaker built 'The Glass City'
Toledo had no particular claim to glassmaking until 1888, when Edward Libbey, struggling to keep his family's New England Glass Company solvent in Cambridge, Massachusetts, accepted local boosters' offer of land and tax breaks and moved the whole operation to Toledo. The gamble paid off less through Libbey's own glassblowing than through his partnership with an employee, Michael Owens, a glassblower who had started in the trade as a child laborer in West Virginia. In 1903 Owens perfected an automatic bottle-blowing machine that could do the work of dozens of skilled hand-blowers, and Libbey built a company, Owens Bottle Machine Company, around the patent; it grew into Owens-Illinois. A second Libbey-Owens partnership, founded in 1916 to mechanize flat sheet glass, became Libbey-Owens-Ford. Between them, the firms that trace back to a failing Massachusetts glassworks made Toledo the country's glass capital, funded the Toledo Museum of Art that Libbey founded in 1901, and left the nickname 'The Glass City' stuck to the place for good.
