How Northwood began
Northwood is the direct successor to Ross Township, whose first documented settler, English immigrant Thomas Burt, bought land there in 1833, four decades before the township's own organization on April 18, 1874, as the northernmost township in Wood County -- a strip of farms, gardens, orchards and railroads just south of East Toledo that survived two cholera epidemics in the 1850s. The Edward Ford Plate Glass Company's arrival in 1898 drew industrial growth to the township's western end, which incorporated separately as the village of Rossford in 1939. What remained of Ross Township incorporated as the city of Northwood on December 1, 1962, taking a name that describes its position at the top of the county, and Wood County's township count dropped from twenty to nineteen as a result.
Settled 1833, by Thomas Burt, who bought land in Section 32 that June, incorporated Ross Township organized April 18, 1874; incorporated as the city of Northwood December 1, 1962, by Wood County commissioners; Ohio municipal incorporation.
Where the name comes from
Northwood was named for its location at the top (north end) of Wood County.
Before the town
The corner of a 34-square-mile Ottawa reservation, called Tushquegon or McCarty's village and granted to Ottawa chiefs by the September 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids, projected into Sections 25 through 28 and 33 through 36 of Ross Township -- the township Northwood succeeded -- per the county's own 1897 history. No mound, earthwork or other named Native village specific to Northwood or the former Ross Township was found in any source consulted.

- — Isaac Rideout moves from Massillon into the future Ross Township, part of a wave of settlers -- including Augustus Prentice, Anson Smith, the Pike brothers, Daniel Coy and the Wales family -- arriving within the following decade.
- — Augustus Prentice and Isaac Rideout build the first log schoolhouse opposite the Rideout House; Elizabeth Mosser is hired as teacher at $1.50 a week.
- — A barn is built for Isaac Rideout, one of the first three barns raised in the township and still in use in 1897.
- — Cholera epidemics strike the settlement twice, killing Augustus Prentice and Levi Warner in 1852 and Daniel Coy in 1854, driving a few other families out entirely.
- — Under the new school law District No. 10 is organized with Perry Stevens, Anson Smith and Elisha Pike as directors; a frame schoolhouse follows in 1854.
- — Ross Township is established as the northernmost township in Wood County, set off from Perrysburg Township; the first officer election is held at the Coy schoolhouse on May 23, 1874.

Stories
A township becomes a city, twice over
Ross Township spent most of a century as a strip of farms, gardens, orchards and railroad lines just south of East Toledo, organized in 1874 with little to distinguish it from Wood County's other farm townships. That changed at its western edge in 1898, when glassmaker Edward Ford built his plate-glass plant along the Maumee and the company town of Rossford grew up around it; Rossford broke away to incorporate as its own village in 1939, taking the industrial heart of the old township with it. What remained -- suburban and agricultural land squeezed between Toledo and the new village -- kept the name Ross Township until December 1, 1962, when it too incorporated, this time as the city of Northwood, named simply for sitting at the top of Wood County's map. The split is why Wood County's township count reads twenty in the older records and nineteen ever since.
The cap of Wood County, with neither church nor saloon
The 1897 county history calls Ross 'the cap of Wood county, a long, narrow cap, extending from the river to the eastern line,' and its youngest township until Grand Rapids split from Weston in 1888. Before April 1874, the neighboring Perrysburg and Lake townships had collected the taxes of its northernmost settlers; the Legislature set Ross off on April 18, 1874, as Wood County's nineteenth township, with its first election at the Coy school house on May 23. Its settlers were farmers and market gardeners who sold into nearby Toledo; the history notes with some satisfaction that Ross had neither church nor saloon, so people who wanted to worship, or to drink, crossed into Lake or Perrysburg Township or East Toledo. In 1895 the township cast 138 votes in November and elected its April officers on a nonpartisan Union ticket without opposition. Ross Township ended on December 1, 1962, when its last portion became the city of Northwood, reducing Wood County's townships from twenty to nineteen.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address.
