How Monclova Township, Lucas County began

Monclova Township lies at the head of the Maumee Rapids, and its first settlers were there before the War of 1812: Samuel Ewing built a mill on Swan Creek inside the present village of Monclova, the war destroyed it, and Ephraim H. and Thomas Leaming rebuilt it in 1817 and sawed lumber for the first fine houses at Maumee. Hezekiah Hubbell and O. H. Beatty laid out the village of Monclova on May 27, 1836, and on March 14, 1853, the county commissioners divided Waynesfield Township, redrew Springfield's lines and constituted Monclova Township on a petition from residents of Springfield, Swanton and Waynesfield. The origin of the name is disputed between a local tradition of a Native word meaning 'one of a clan' and the Mexican city of Monclova. The Fallen Timbers battlefield, listed as a National Historic Landmark under Monclova Township, lies at the township's southeastern edge. The township had 991 residents in 1920 and 14,827 at the 2020 census.

Settled before the War of 1812 (Samuel Ewing's mill on Swan Creek; his son Anthony, born 1808, is reputed the first white child born in the township), platted village of Monclova laid out and recorded May 27, 1836, by O. H. Beatty and Hezekiah Hubbell, incorporated township constituted March 14, 1853, when the commissioners divided Waynesfield Township, reset Springfield Township's boundaries and created Monclova, on a petition filed March 7, 1853, by O. H. Beatty and Hezekiah Hubbell (village plat).

Where the name comes from

The name's origin is disputed. Monclova Township's own account credits Anna Gunn, a Monclova schoolteacher in the early 1900s, with the tradition that the name is a Native American word meaning 'one of a clan'; other sources instead trace the name to Monclova, the Spanish colonial city founded in 1577 in Coahuila, Mexico, possibly adopted locally in the years around the Mexican-American War (which ended in 1848, shortly before the township organized). We could not determine which account is correct.

Before the town

The 1807 Treaty of Detroit, in which the Odawa (Ottawa), Ojibwe (Chippewa), Wyandot and Potawatomi ceded land north and west of the Maumee, reserved to them a tract three miles square on the river above the Greenville twelve-mile reserve that included Presque Isle, 'about half way between Waterville and Maumee City'; Killits (1923) places the railroad hamlet of Presque Isle, named for the bluff on the Maumee, in the southern part of Monclova Township. When John Strayer took up land in Section 33 (Town 2, United States Reserve) in 1832-33, part of it was in use as an Indian camping ground, and Waggoner records the relations as peaceful. Waggoner places Blue Jacket's force of about 2,000 at the Rapids near Presque Isle before the battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794; the Fallen Timbers Battlefield, declared a National Historic Landmark, is entered in Wikipedia's Lucas County National Register list under Monclova Township (two miles west of Maumee on U.S. 24), while Wikipedia's article on the battle places the memorial site in Maumee, reflecting later annexation. The township's own tradition that 'Monclova' is a Native word meaning 'one of a clan' is reported under the name origin and is not verified.

Nations recorded here: Odawa (Ottawa), Ojibwe (Chippewa), Wyandot, Potawatomi, Shawnee.

  • Presque Isle reserve (treaty) — Maumee River at Presque Isle, about halfway between Waterville and Maumee; the Presque Isle hamlet is in southern Monclova Township, reserved by the Treaty of Detroit, November 7, 1807 (archive.org)
  • Indian camping ground on the Strayer farm (camp) — Southeast quarter of Section 33, Town 2, United States Reserve, early 1830s (archive.org)
  • Fallen Timbers Battlefield (battle) — two miles west of Maumee on U.S. Route 24; listed under Monclova Township, now within Maumee, August 20, 1794 (NHL listing on the National Register October 15, 1966) (en.wikipedia.org)

Stories

A township with two stories about its own name

Monclova Township's own history credits Anna Gunn, a Monclova schoolteacher in the early 1900s, with the tradition that 'Monclova' is a Native word meaning 'one of a clan.' Other accounts trace the name to Monclova, a Spanish colonial city founded in 1577 in Coahuila, Mexico, whose name would have been familiar to Americans after the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. The township was constituted in 1853, five years after that war ended. Neither Waggoner's 1888 history nor Killits's 1923 history, both of which describe the township's organization, explains the name. No source consulted settles the question, and the township's website gives only the local tradition.

The mill on Swan Creek

The first mill on Swan Creek stood a few rods above the later Main Street bridge in Monclova, built by Samuel Ewing some time before the War of 1812. The war scattered the few settlers at the head of the Rapids, and the mill was destroyed with much else in the valley. In 1817, when the government first sold land in the Reserve, Ephraim H. Leaming and his brother Thomas, carpenters and millwrights from Livingston County, New York, bought on Swan Creek and rebuilt it. The Leamings hauled its lumber by ox team to Maumee, where it went into the houses of John E. Hunt and Major Forsyth, and Thomas Leaming built one or both of them. Ephraim's daughter Maria, who married Anson Reed, lived on the Monclova homestead from 1818 and in 1888 was the oldest living settler in the township; her brother Thomas H. Leaming was president of the pioneer association until his death in 1885.

Six Ruckel sons

Christopher Ruckel, a native of Ireland who had lived many years in Monclova, had six sons in the Union army during the Civil War. David served in the 14th Ohio, John in the 100th Ohio, Philip in the 60th Ohio, George in the 6th Michigan Cavalry, Daniel in the 128th Ohio and Henry in the 14th Ohio. George was killed on June 11, 1864, and Philip on June 17, 1864, both near Petersburg, Virginia, and David was shot while beside his brother Henry. Only Daniel and Henry were alive in August 1865. Waggoner recorded the family in his 1888 roll of the county's soldiers; in a separate passage he notes that none of the roughly 120 men who enlisted from Monclova received a commission when they went out.
