How Sylvania Township, Lucas County began

Sylvania Township, named for the forest that covered its rolling upland along the Ottawa River (Ten Mile Creek), was settled from the spring of 1832, when David White and William Wilson entered land at a river fork the first settlers called 'the Forks.' The ground lay in the strip claimed by both Michigan and Ohio, and until the Toledo War was settled it belonged to the Michigan townships of Blissfield and Whiteford; Ohio's Sylvania Township was erected in 1837 and held its first recorded town meeting on April 2, 1838, when 91 votes were cast. White platted the town of Whiteford in 1835 and Wilson and partners platted Sylvania beside it in 1836; the two were consolidated and incorporated as the village of Sylvania in 1866-67. Around the village the township remained farms, woodlots and railroad hamlets (Mitchaw, Allen Junction, Glantown or Silica, where a cement mill was built in 1922) with 3,141 residents in 1920; by 2020 it had 31,668 residents outside the city and 50,679 including it.

Settled spring 1832 (David White and William Wilson enter land at the site of Sylvania), platted Whiteford, by David White, recorded July 11, 1835; Sylvania, for William Wilson, William F. Dewey, L. W. Allen and D. D. Harris, acknowledged June 13, 1836, incorporated township erected 1837 from territory the Michigan authorities had organized as Blissfield and Whiteford townships; first recorded town meeting April 2, 1838, by David White and William Wilson.

Where the name comes from

Waggoner's 1888 history states that the township 'was originally noted for its fine woods; hence the name,' and Killits (1923) likewise says the timber that covered much of the surface gave it the name Sylvania; the word comes from the Latin sylva, forest. Before the name was fixed, Waggoner records, the settlement site was called 'the Forks.' Wikipedia notes it is the only Sylvania Township in Ohio.

Before the town

Waggoner's 1888 history records that Indians were numerous at Sylvania when the first settlers came in 1832. Before the village cemetery was laid out in 1835, settlers buried some of their dead on a sandy knoll south of the Ottawa River where Indians had also been buried, and when the Native families were to be removed west, 'the remnant of them' came back and held a farewell dance around the graves of their kindred. The source does not name the nation; the Odawa (Ottawa) held reservations on the lower Maumee until the 1830s, but no source we found ties these families to a named people, so none is assigned. The township itself lay in the strip claimed by both Michigan and Ohio and was ceded by the 1807 Treaty of Detroit, which covered the land north of the Maumee.

Stories

The forest township that outgrew its own city

Sylvania took its name from its woods: Waggoner wrote in 1888 that the township 'was originally noted for its fine woods; hence the name,' and that the timber was then mostly gone. When General David White and Judge William Wilson began buying land in 1832, the rolling ground along the Ottawa River lay on the wooded edge of the Black Swamp, and the site was known simply as 'the Forks.' White's 1832 log house on the north bank was the township's first, and he planted its first orchard. Wilson's 1836 plat of Sylvania became the center of the township, which kept growing around it; by the 2020 census the township counted more than 50,000 residents, over 31,000 of them outside the city of Sylvania, the largest population in Lucas County after Toledo.

The aeronaut in Salmon Miner's woods

On September 16, 1858, a balloonist named Thurston and his associate Bannister made an advertised ascension from Adrian, Michigan, and landed safely at Riga, on the railroad between Adrian and Sylvania. While Bannister worked at the netting, Thurston sat astride the wooden valve frame on top of the gas bag; when the netting came off, the bag rose with him still clinging to it. Bannister last saw it about two miles up, sailing north, and the balloon was found days later at West Tilbury, in Canada West, with its valve torn. In March 1859 a young man named Hoag, looking for lost sheep in the woods on Salmon Miner's farm in Sylvania Township, six miles from Toledo, found bones, boots and clothing; the pockets held a watch stopped at 11:40, a knife, a purse with $136 and a letter addressed to Thurston. Neighbors then remembered a boy who, on the day of the ascension, had heard a whistling sound and seen something fall into those woods. The remains were taken to Adrian and delivered to the administrator of Thurston's estate.

A schoolhouse moved away from the trains

The first schoolhouse in Sylvania was a frame building about 18 by 24 feet that General David White built at his own expense in 1834, and it served as a meeting house as well. The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad, completed through the village in 1836, ran cars on Sunday close by the building, and a train passed about the time morning services were held. The noise so annoyed White that he had the building moved to the opposite side of town, where it served as church and schoolhouse for several more years. White was also a member of the railroad's first board of directors.
