How Oregon began

Oregon began as Oregon Township, organized in 1838 out of Great Black Swamp forest -- oak, hickory, ash, walnut, elm and maple that fed a string of early sawmills, drained along ditches that often followed older Native trails and still carry stormwater today. Local tradition credits the township's name to Pierre M. Irving, nephew of writer Washington Irving, who is said to have taken it from the far-off Oregon fur country his uncle had just written about in Astoria. Oil refining reshaped the township's northwest through the twentieth century, and when Toledo moved to annex that industrial base in the 1950s, township residents voted instead, 3,660 to 2,925 in 1957, to incorporate as their own city -- taking on their own water and wastewater plants as part of the bargain.

Where the name comes from

Local tradition attributes the name Oregon to Pierre M. Irving, nephew of author Washington Irving, who is said to have named the township for the Oregon Country fur-trading lands associated with John Jacob Astor -- the subject of his uncle's book Astoria -- rather than for anything local.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Oregon town site is recorded in the sources we reviewed, though the drainage ditches that early settlers dug through the Great Black Swamp here are noted as often following older Indian trails, a physical trace of earlier Native use of the ground even where no settlement is documented.

Timeline

  1. — Oregon Township is organized following land survey and public land sales.
  2. — The township acquires two cemeteries that remain city-owned today.
  3. — The Brandville School, the township's first two-story, two-room brick schoolhouse, is built; admission to its grades 5-8 requires an entrance exam.
  4. — Brandville School closes; the building is later rented to a rug-cleaning company, then sits vacant for nearly 50 years.
  5. — Toledo moves to annex Oregon Township's industrial northwest, prompting township officials to pursue their own zoning instead.
  6. — Toledo's port operations expand to Maumee Bay, alongside the township's BP and Sun Marketing oil refineries and other industry.
  7. — Voters approve incorporating Oregon as a city, 3,660 to 2,925, with owning and operating its own water and wastewater plants a key issue in the campaign.

Stories

A city born of an annexation fight

Oregon Township spent more than a century as farmland reclaimed from the Great Black Swamp before its northwest corner became something else entirely: an industrial belt of oil refineries -- British Petroleum and Sun Marketing both built plants there around the turn of the twentieth century -- coal-fired power generation, chemical plants and the Buckeye Pipeline's distribution lines. Toledo, next door, wanted that tax base, and in 1954 moved to annex it. Township officials fought back with zoning, but the surer defense was to stop being a township at all: in 1957 residents voted 3,660 to 2,925 to incorporate as the city of Oregon, with control of their own water and wastewater systems -- rather than depending on Toledo's -- a central argument for cityhood. The new city adopted a charter the following year and, not without some irony given the fight that created it, took the motto 'City of Opportunity.'
