How Sylvania began

Sylvania traces to a log cabin General David White built about 1832 at what became the corner of Summit and Monroe streets, on land he and Judge William Wilson had bought together north of the Maumee in a stretch of the Great Black Swamp's forest -- the source of the town's Latin name, meaning roughly 'forest land.' The Toledo War border dispute of the mid-1830s split the two partners' jointly held land between two separate towns, White's Whiteford across the state line in Michigan and Wilson's Sylvania, which Wilson platted in June 1836; the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad, one of the first railroads built west of the Appalachians, reached the area the same era and gave the new town an early edge in trade. Sylvania incorporated in 1867 and has since grown into Lucas County's second-largest municipality, now effectively continuous with both Toledo and its own surrounding Sylvania Township.

Settled about 1832, when General David White built a log cabin at the future corner of Summit and Monroe streets, platted June 1836, by Judge William Wilson, incorporated 1867, by Judge William Wilson.

Where the name comes from

Sylvania takes its name from the Latin for 'forest land,' a description of the dense woods -- part of the Great Black Swamp -- that covered the area before settlement; it is, per Wikipedia, the only place in Ohio to carry the name.

Before the town

No Native village, camp, trail or treaty event specific to the Sylvania town site itself is recorded in the sources we reviewed; the area was, like much of northern Lucas County, part of the forested Great Black Swamp margin used for hunting and travel by the Odawa (Ottawa), Potawatomi and other nations before the 1807 and 1817 treaty cessions opened it to settlement.

Timeline

  1. — General David White, a War of 1812 veteran from Palmyra, New York, builds a log cabin at what becomes the corner of Summit and Monroe streets, the first structure of what will be Sylvania.
  2. — White and his land partner, Judge William Wilson, split their jointly purchased acreage amid the Toledo War boundary dispute; White develops Whiteford Township across the line in Michigan while Wilson keeps the Ohio side.
  3. — William Wilson presents the original plat of Sylvania.
  4. — The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad completes its 32.8-mile line from Port Lawrence (Toledo) northeast to Adrian, Michigan, passing through the Sylvania area and giving the young town an early rail connection.
  5. — Students pose for a photograph outside the Glanntown and Silica schools near Sylvania.
  6. — Sylvania builds a railroad depot.
  7. — A post office is established at Sylvania.
  8. — Sylvania incorporates.

Stories

One survey, two towns

General David White and Judge William Wilson bought their northern Lucas County land together, roughly 1,920 acres in what was then reckoned Port Lawrence Township, plus another 1,720 acres just across the state line in what became Whiteford Township, Michigan. For a couple of years the partnership held together, but the Toledo War -- the 1835-36 dispute over exactly where Ohio ended and Michigan began -- put the two men on opposite sides of a border neither of them had drawn, and their partnership dissolved along with it. White took the Michigan side, opening Whiteford's first school in 1834 and platting the township in 1835; Wilson kept the Ohio ground and platted Sylvania in June 1836, naming it, in a bit of understatement, for the forest that still covered most of it. The two towns grew up a few miles apart, on either side of a line that a national boundary commission, not either founder, had finally settled.

Mostly estimated. Only 4% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Sylvania - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,915 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
