How Springfield Township, Lucas County began

Springfield Township was erected by the Lucas County commissioners in 1836 out of land in Township No. 2 of the Twelve Mile Square Reserve and the disputed strip up to the Fulton line, and held its first election at William Ford's house on October 8, 1836. Dennis Sage, who came in 1829, is credited as the first settler; by 1834 some thirty families had followed, John Gnagy had a sawmill with a small set of corn buhrs on Wolf Creek, and a Methodist class met at Thomas Wood's tavern. The township lost its south end to Monclova in 1853 and ground on the Maumee river tracts to the new Carey (Adams) Township in 1856, and its one village, Holland, grew up on the railroad after Robert Clark's plat of 1863. It had about 800 residents in 1887 and 1,415 in 1920; at the 2020 census, with Toledo's suburbs grown into it, it had 26,957.

Settled 1829 (Dennis Sage, credited as the first settler), incorporated erected by resolution of the county commissioners in June 1836 (Killits gives June 20; the genealogytrails.com transcription gives June 30); first township election October 8, 1836, by Lucas County commissioners; first trustees James Egnew, Thomas Wood and John Birchfield.

Where the name comes from

No source we consulted explains why the township took the name Springfield rather than something local; Ohio has eleven townships by that name, making it one of the state's most repeated township names.

Before the town

Part of Springfield Township was laid out in Township No. 2 of the Twelve Mile Square Reserve, the tract at the foot of the Maumee Rapids ceded to the United States by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, as the 1836 resolution erecting the township states; the rest lay in the strip north toward the Fulton line. No Native village, camp or trail inside the township's own boundaries is recorded in Waggoner (1888), Killits (1923) or the other sources consulted. The Fallen Timbers Battlefield is entered in Wikipedia's National Register list under neighboring Monclova Township and today lies in Maumee; it is not a Springfield Township site.

  3. — David Trumbull settles in Section 17, on land that later becomes the Trumbull cranberry farm.
  4. — John Gnagy builds the township's first sawmill, on Wolf Creek, with a small set of buhrs for grinding corn; John Walter builds a sawmill on Swan Creek about two years later.
  5. — The commissioners erect Springfield Township by a resolution of June 1836 (June 20 per Killits, June 30 per the genealogytrails.com transcription), and the first three school districts are laid off.

Stories

Organized in a storekeeper's loft, on land two states wanted

When Daniel Hubbell, Samuel Ewing and John Pray climbed the stairs to the second floor of Almon Gibbs's store in Maumee on the appointed day in 1836, the township they were about to organize did not sit on entirely settled ground -- Springfield lay north of the so-called Fulton line, inside the strip both Ohio and the Michigan Territory were actively claiming in the Toledo War. Ohio pressed ahead with local government anyway, carving Springfield out of the older Waynesfield Township and putting Hubbell in as the new board's clerk, a bureaucratic act of confidence that the boundary dispute would eventually break Ohio's way, as within a year it did. The three commissioners themselves are a small cross-section of the young county: Hubbell from Miami, Ewing from Orleans, and Pray, the Waterville trading-post builder, representing a river town platted just a few years before.

The cranberry farm in Section 17

David Trumbull, who founded the Trumbull family of Springfield Township, settled in 1833 on the west half of the southwest quarter of Section 17. Part of the land became known as the Cranberry Farm. In October 1870 his son James picked 400 bushels of cranberries from three acres there, fruit then worth $3.80 a bushel, or about $500 an acre. They were picked on shares of one-fifth, and 250 pickers were on the ground at once. James's son Rufus H. Trumbull later raised as many as 1,600 bushels in a season and in 1887 had twelve acres in the crop. Two of David Trumbull's grandsons, William O. and Rufus H., served in the Union army.
