How Shelby County began
Shelby County was organized April 1, 1819 from Miami County and named for Revolutionary War officer and Kentucky governor Isaac Shelby. Its earliest recorded chapter is not the county itself but Pierre-Louis de Lorimier's 1769 fur-trading post near present-day Fort Loramie, a center of Shawnee and Wyandot trade destroyed by American raiders in 1782 and replaced in 1795 by the U.S. Army's Fort Loramie, one of the boundary markers of the Treaty of Greenville. The county seat moved from Hardin to Sidney in 1820, and the arrival of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1841 brought German Catholic immigrants who founded the county's canal-town villages. Today the county is anchored by Sidney and a ring of small, largely German- and French-Catholic-founded villages and farm townships.
The first county seat was Hardin; it moved to Sidney in 1820 to better centralize county government. The Court of Common Pleas first sat at Hardin on May 17, 1819.
