How Kettlersville began

Kettlersville is a small village in Van Buren Township, in northwestern Shelby County, platted in 1873 by Christopher Kettler on seven lots and named for him; Christopher and William Kettler later added forty-five more. It sits near the watershed between the Great Miami and Maumee river systems, beside some three hundred acres of peat that a Geological Survey of Ohio geologist examined on William Kettler's farm in the 1870s. By 1883 it had a store, a steam sawmill, a German Lutheran church organized in 1882, a town house and a grange hall, and it had 149 residents in 1913. It marked its 150th anniversary in 2023.

Settled 1832 (Van Buren Township), platted 1873, by Christopher Kettler.

Where the name comes from

The village was named directly for its founder and platter, Christopher Kettler.

Before the town

No Native American sites or villages specific to Kettlersville are recorded in the county histories. Van Buren Township's organizing order of 1834 begins 'at the old Indian boundary line,' the Greenville Treaty line of 1795, and the township lies north of it, in land ceded by the 1817 treaty at the Foot of the Rapids (Treaty of Fort Meigs) that the 1883 county history prints.

Timeline

  3. — Christopher Kettler platted the village of Kettlersville and gave it his name.
  4. — The original plat had seven lots; Christopher and William Kettler later added forty-five, and C. F. Quillhorst kept the first store.
  5. — A U.S. post office began operating in Kettlersville.
  6. — Geologist John Hussey, writing for the Geological Survey of Ohio, reported that William Kettler owned about 140 acres of the township's peat beds, which lay along the new Kettler turnpike on the watershed.
  7. — The German Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kettlersville was organized in the spring with thirty-five members under Rev. A. Merkley and built a frame church, 60 by 34 feet, for $3,500 (1882 in the 1883 history; 1883 in the 1913 history).
  8. — Van Buren Grange No. 269, first organized in 1875, was reorganized in the winter of 1883 with William Kettler as secretary.

Stories

The peat beds on the Kettler farm

Kettlersville lies on the low divide between the Great Miami and Maumee river systems, and the 1878 Geological Survey of Ohio said the Kettler turnpike roughly marked that watershed. Where the ground drained neither way, beds of peat had formed, over three hundred acres in Van Buren Township, about 140 of them on William Kettler's land. When geologist John Hussey examined them, Kettler had dug large ditches through the peat and the survey party could not find its bottom with a fence stake; residents believed it averaged ten feet deep. Hussey warned Kettler that once the peat dried out a careless fire in late summer could burn deep holes that nothing in the region could put out, and he noted that small fires had already done so. The drained peat grew the best crops he saw in the county: Kettler sowed twelve acres of it in rye, cut 33 bushels an acre, and the next year harvested a volunteer second crop of 12 bushels an acre from the grain that had shattered onto the ground.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
