How Sidney began

Sidney was laid out in 1819-1820 on a 70-acre tract along the west bank of the Great Miami River donated by Charles Starrett, and chosen as the seat of the newly formed Shelby County. It was named for the Elizabethan poet and soldier Sir Philip Sidney. The Miami and Erie Canal (built through the area 1825-1837) and later railroads (east-west in 1851, north-south in 1856) turned the county-seat village into a manufacturing and trading center. Today Sidney is known for its Second Empire courthouse, its Louis Sullivan-designed bank, and a population of about 21,000.

Where the name comes from

Sidney was named for Sir Philip Sidney, the 16th-century English poet, courtier and soldier, rather than for any local resident.

Before the town

Before Euro-American settlement the Sidney area was hunting ground shared by the Shawnee and Miami (Myaamia) nations along the Great Miami River. No mounds, named villages, or documented treaty boundary lines specific to the city site itself were found in the sources consulted; the broader county's Native history includes Adena/Hopewell/Fort Ancient sites, the Shawnee towns and the Treaty of Greenville cession line. The Lockington Covered Bridge and Lockington Locks, sometimes associated with the 45356/Sidney-area ZIP codes, are physically in Orange and Washington townships, well outside Sidney city, and are excluded here.

Timeline

Stories

A poet's name on the Great Miami

When Shelby County organized in 1819, its commissioners needed a county seat and a name for it. Charles Starrett donated a 70-acre parcel on the west bank of the Great Miami River for the townsite, and rather than honor a local founder, the platters named the new town for Sir Philip Sidney, the Elizabethan poet, courtier and soldier who died in 1586 fighting in the Netherlands. The choice reflected the classical and literary tastes common among early Ohio town-namers; Sidney's own school system later carried the theme forward, naming elementary schools for writers such as Emerson, Longfellow and Whittier.

Louis Sullivan's jewel box on Court Street

In 1917, near the end of his career and largely out of favor with big-city clients, Chicago architect Louis Sullivan designed a small bank building for the People's Federal Savings and Loan Association at 101 East Court Street. It was one of eight small Midwestern bank commissions Sullivan completed between 1908 and 1919, buildings later nicknamed his 'jewel boxes' for their compact size and richly ornamented terra-cotta and brick facades. The Sidney building still houses a bank today and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
