How Van Buren Township, Shelby County began

Van Buren Township was organized December 1, 1834, in the northwest corner of Shelby County. Its first permanent settlers arrived around 1832, and its own villages are Kettlersville, platted in 1873 by Christopher Kettler, and the smaller McCartyville; a handful of other plats (Pulaski, Molike, Rumley) never grew. Two National Register-listed rural Catholic sites, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Rectory at McCartyville and the St. Patrick Catholic Church site, are the township's most notable historic buildings. The 1913 county history does not place Botkins or Anna villages within Van Buren Township's boundaries, contrary to a common assumption based on shared ZIP codes; this page therefore covers Van Buren's own villages only.

Settled 1832, incorporated 1834, by organized December 1, 1834; early settlers included Elias Spray, Moses E. Baker, Richard Elliott, Adam Paul, Adam Braun and John McCullough.

Where the name comes from

No source consulted gives a documented explanation of the choice of 'Van Buren' for the township name; it was organized in 1834, during Martin Van Buren's vice presidency and shortly before his 1836 election as president, but no citation ties the name directly to him.

Before the town

No mounds, earthworks, named villages, or treaty lines specific to Van Buren Township were found in the sources consulted. The township lies in the Shawnee and Miami hunting grounds of the upper Great Miami valley. Its 1834 organizing order begins 'at the old Indian boundary line,' the 1795 Greenville Treaty line, and the whole township lies north of that line, on land ceded by the Treaty of Fort Meigs (1817), not in 1795.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Miami.

Stories

Two ZIP codes, one township -- and two villages that aren't in it

Van Buren Township's residents today share ZIP codes with Botkins and Anna, and a ZIP-based lead can make it look as though those villages belong to the township. The 1913 History of Shelby County, however, names only Kettlersville and McCartyville as Van Buren's villages, alongside three plats -- Pulaski, Molike and Rumley -- that never grew past a few lots. Botkins was platted in 1858 and Anna in 1868, and neither the county history nor Wikipedia's township article assigns them to Van Buren Township; this page leaves them out rather than guess, in the same spirit as the county's better-known Lockington/Sidney ZIP mismatch.
