How Holmes County began

Holmes County was formed on January 20, 1824, from 87,440 acres of Wayne, 162,200 of Coshocton and 16,200 of Tuscarawas counties, organized in 1825, and named for Major Andrew Hunter Holmes, killed leading the failed American attack on Mackinac Island on August 4, 1814. The Greenville Treaty line of 1795, the 'Indian Boundary,' runs diagonally across it from east-northeast to west-southwest: the land south of the line was United States Military District, surveyed into five-mile townships and 100-acre lots for Revolutionary soldiers, and the land north of it, the 'new purchase,' was ceded by the Treaty of Fort Industry in 1805 and surveyed in six-mile townships. The first cabin was Jonathan Grant's on Salt Creek in July 1809, the same year Jonas Stutzman, an Amish farmer from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, began clearing land near Walnut Creek; the Amish families who followed him built what is now the second-largest Amish settlement in the world after Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, while Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia settlers, Swiss and German immigrants and a French Catholic colony at Calmoutier (1832) filled the rest of the Killbuck valley. Millersburg, laid out by Charles Miller and Adam Johnson in 1824, has been the seat throughout, and the county stayed a farming county of wheat, sheep, horses, cheese and stone quarries, best remembered outside Ohio for the 1863 draft resistance called the Holmes County Rebellion. Today about 44,000 people live there, close to half of them Amish, in a county with no city and a tourist economy built on 'Ohio's Amish Country.'

Millersburg, laid out in 1824 by Charles Miller and Adam Johnson a quarter mile south of an earlier Millersburg platted about 1816; the associate judges first met there February 18, 1825. The log courthouse and jail burned in 1834 and were replaced by brick, and the present stone courthouse, built of white, blue and gray stone from county quarries, was completed in 1886.
