How Walnut Creek Township, Holmes County began

Walnut Creek Township, in eastern Holmes County, holds the first permanent white settlement in the eastern part of what became Holmes County. Jonas Stutzman, an Amish settler from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, cleared land here in the spring of 1809, and the families of Troyer, Hochstetler, Weaver, Miller, Domer and Berger followed in 1809-10 along Walnut and Sugar creeks. The village of Walnut Creek was laid out in 1826 as New Carlisle and took its present name when a post office opened in 1841. Since the 1990s it has been rebuilt as an American-Victorian tourist town at the center of the Holmes County Amish settlement, which a 2002 state marker called the largest Amish settlement in North America.

Settled spring 1809 (Jonas Stutzman), platted 1826 (as New Carlisle), by Jonas Stutzman and Somerset County, Pennsylvania Amish families.

Where the name comes from

The township and village are named for Walnut Creek, the stream running through them. Wikipedia says the village was laid out in 1826 as New Carlisle and was renamed Walnut Creek when the post office opened in 1841.

Before the town

A marker on Township Road 421 tells that when the Jacob Mast family settled in Walnut Creek in 1812, two to four Native hunters returning from a night's hunt would sometimes try the unbarred cabin door, slip in and sleep in front of the fireplace, and Mrs. Mast would feed them breakfast, after which they went up the hollow to their encampment. The Stutzman marker adds that Jonas Stutzman arrived in the spring of 1809 in what it calls Indian Territory. These are commemorative accounts, not records from the time, and the marker does not name the people involved. No earthwork or village site is recorded.

Stories

The cradle settlement

Walnut Creek's Amish history begins with Jonas Stutzman, who came from Pennsylvania in 1809 and cleared land beside the creek that gave the place its name. More Amish families soon followed him from Pennsylvania, and the cluster of farms became the root of the Holmes County Amish settlement. The village was laid out in 1826 as New Carlisle and took the name Walnut Creek when its post office opened in 1841. From the 1990s business leaders rebuilt it as an American-Victorian-themed tourist town.

White Jonas and the chair for the Lord

Jonas Stutzman came from Somerset County, Pennsylvania, in the spring of 1809 to clear land and build a log home for his wife, Magdalena Gerber Stutzman, and their family, and he was the first permanent settler in the eastern part of what became Holmes County in 1825. He was Amish, and the marker lists the Millers, Hershbergers, Hochstetlers, Weavers, Masts, Troyers and Schrocks who followed him and founded what the marker, in 2002, called the largest Amish settlement in North America. Stutzman ran the first sawmill, taught school, and in later life dressed in white, which is how he came to be called Der Weiss, White Jonas. In 1849 he wrote a booklet predicting the Lord's return in four years, and then, as the marker tells it, built an oversize chair for Him. He died on October 18, 1871. His hillside family cemetery south of Walnut Creek was razed in 1964, and some of the remains and markers were moved to the cemetery where the second marker, put up in 1994 by the German Culture Museum Board, now stands.

A frontier breakfast on the Mast hearth

The Peace Bridge marker on Township Road 421 tells of the Jacob Mast family, who settled in Walnut Creek in 1812, three years after Jonas Stutzman. The Masts did not bar their cabin door. On cold winter nights, two to four Native hunters coming home from the night's hunt would sometimes try the latch, slip in, and sleep in front of the fireplace. The family would look down from the sleeping loft in the morning, see them there, and Mrs. Mast would climb down carefully to cook breakfast for her guests. After the meal the hunters went up the hollow to their encampment. The marker uses the story to argue that the Amish, as Anabaptists who hold that following Jesus means never killing a fellow man, shared hospitality rather than driving Native people off. It is a local commemorative account written two centuries later and names no one among the hunters.
