How Monroe Township, Holmes County began
Monroe Township, in west-central Holmes County, was first settled in 1810-11 by families including the Finneys, the Mackeys and the Hevelands, at a time when this ground was still administered as part of Coshocton County rather than Holmes, which was not organized until 1824. No incorporated village lies within the township today, though West Holmes High School stands on Route 39 within its boundaries. Its population grew from 898 in 1840 to 1,605 by 2020.
Settled 1810-1811 (the Finneys, Mackeys, Hevelands and others, then in Coshocton County), incorporated December 1825 (organized by the county commissioners as township No. 6), by The Finney, Mackey, Underhill, Heveland and Frazier families.
Where the name comes from
Neither Wikipedia nor the early county histories give a reason for the name Monroe; it is one of twenty-two Monroe Townships in Ohio.
Before the town
No Native village, trail or mound specific to Monroe Township is recorded in the sources checked. The township lies south of the treaty-era 'Indian boundary line' of 1785, in the United States Military District: the early county history says land there was open to entry from March 13, 1800, and that tracts were located 'in Monroe, Walnut Creek and Paint townships' soon after the first claim on Doughty Creek, and that settlers south of the line paid taxes at New Philadelphia or Coshocton. When Monroe was first settled in 1811-14 it lay in Coshocton County.
Timeline
- — On March 13 lands in the United States Military District become open to entry; Hodijah Baylis locates the first tract in what becomes Holmes County, 400 acres on Doughty Creek, and soon other military tracts are located in Monroe, Walnut Creek and Paint townships.
- — The Finneys, Mackeys, Underhills, Hevelands and Thomas Frazier begin to settle the township between 1810 and 1814, when it is still part of Coshocton County.
- — Coshocton County is organized and takes in most of the future Holmes land south of the Indian boundary line, including, per Howe, what becomes Monroe Township.
- — Holmes County is organized, and David I. Finney of Monroe is one of its first three commissioners (first session April 18); in December the commissioners lay out the townships, Monroe being No. 6 with boundaries unchanged since.
- — Township population recorded at 898.
- — Township population recorded at 1,054.
- — Township population recorded at 1,062; it reaches 1,381 in 2000 and 1,573 in 2010.
- — Township population recorded at 1,605, with West Holmes High School on Route 39 within the township.
Stories
A settlement in the wrong county
The first families in what is now Monroe Township, the Finneys, Mackeys, Underhills, Hevelands and Thomas Frazier, arrived between 1810 and 1814, and for them the county seat was a long ride away. The line the treaties had called the Indian boundary ran diagonally through the future county. Settlers south of it, as in Monroe, paid their taxes and did their legal business at New Philadelphia, then at Coshocton once Coshocton County was organized in 1811, while those north of it went to Wooster. When Holmes County was finally organized in 1825, David I. Finney of Monroe was one of its first three commissioners, and the township was fixed as No. 6 in the new county's list.
