How Paint Township, Holmes County began

Paint Township, the northeastern corner of Holmes County, is the only Holmes County township bordering Stark County. Colonel William Crawford's column of volunteers entered Holmes County in May 1782 on a lot in Paint Township on its way to the Sandusky, settlers arrived 1810-1812, and the commissioners fixed the township in December 1825. Winesburg, on a hilltop in its southwest, was founded in 1829 as Weinsberg (1832 by another account) and got its post office as Winesburg in 1833. In the heart of the Holmes County Amish settlement, the township grew from 2,825 residents in 1990 to 4,564 in 2020.

Settled 1810-1812 (Harrolds, Snyders, Hurlesses, Thornbergs and others), platted 1829 (Winesburg, as Weinsberg; one source says 1832), incorporated 1825 (township No. 10 of 14; boundaries fixed December 1825).

Where the name comes from

Wikipedia says the township name most likely comes from a local spring whose water had a reddish tint; Newton's 1876 history refers to Paint Creek and to Paint Township, and neither it nor Howe's 1888 history explains the name. Winesburg was founded in 1829 as Weinsberg, after the town in Germany, and postal authorities respelled it in 1833.

Before the town

Newton's 1876 history of Holmes County records the one dated encounter inside the township: Colonel William Crawford's army of over 400 mounted volunteers left the Mingo Bottom on the Ohio on May 25, 1782 to punish the Indians on the Sandusky, crossed the Tuscarawas near the mouth of Sugar Creek, and entered Holmes County on lot 14, township 10, range 4, in Paint Township, then went down Martin's Creek to the gap on the Dawson farm and on to the big spring on the Killbuck. The Indian boundary line ran diagonally across the county, and Delaware (Lenape) towns stood on the Killbuck to the west (Killbuck's Town and White Woman's Town), with Tom Lion the last Native resident near Berlin. No Native village or mound inside Paint Township is recorded in the sources consulted.

Stories

Crawford's army crosses Paint Township

On May 25, 1782 Colonel William Crawford left the Mingo Bottom on the Ohio with more than 400 mounted, well-armed volunteers to punish the Indians on the Sandusky for raids on border settlers. They crossed the Tuscarawas near the mouth of Sugar Creek and entered what would become Holmes County on a lot in Paint Township, then followed Martin's Creek down to a gap on the later Dawson farm and over the flats at Holmesville to a big spring on the Killbuck, where they camped. A sick man died there that night and was buried next morning, his initials cut on a tree. In 1812 Dawson's neighbors raised a block house at the same gap, remembering the army's passage thirty years before.

A German name, not Sherwood Anderson's town

Winesburg stands on a hilltop in Paint Township and was founded in 1829 as Weinsberg, after a town in Germany; the post office of 1833 respelled it Winesburg, though Kilbourn's gazetteer of the same year spells it Winesburgh. Its early trades were pottery, tanning, harness-making, gunsmithing and coopering, and two houses of 1834, the Stone Cottage Inn and the Grapevine House, still stand. It shares its name with Sherwood Anderson's 1919 story cycle, but Wikipedia says the village is not Anderson's setting, a claim it marks as needing a citation. The coincidence is just that. Today Winesburg is a hilltop village of antique shops and a meat market at the center of the Amish settlement.
