How Mechanic Township, Holmes County began
Mechanic Township, the only township of that name in Ohio, lies in the southern part of Holmes County; its Williams farm stood on Douty Creek. On March 13, 1800, Hodijah Baylis located a 400-acre Revolutionary War bounty tract on Douty Creek, the first tract taken up in what became Holmes County and later the Williams farm in this township; settlers including the Carpenters and Morrisons arrived on Douty Creek in 1810, and a mill stood on the Williams farm soon after. The commissioners organized it in 1825 as township No. 2. It has no incorporated village; the lake community of Lake Buckhorn, impounded in 1967, is in it, and population grew from 1,271 in 1880 to 3,222 in 2020.

Not found in the sources checked; Wikipedia notes only that Mechanic is the only township of that name in Ohio, and neither Newton's 1876 history nor Howe's 1888 history explains it.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or trail within Mechanic Township is recorded in the sources consulted. Because Hodijah Baylis's 1800 tract lay in the township, it belongs to the United States Military District south of the Indian boundary line that Newton's 1876 history says ran diagonally across Holmes County; land north of that line was ceded at Fort Industry in 1805 and surveyed from 1807, while land south of it was surveyed for Revolutionary War bounties from 1797 to 1800. Newton records Delaware (Lenape) towns on the Killbuck to the north and west, and Tom Lion, a Delaware, as the last Native resident, living on Lion's Run north of Berlin.

The first land entry in Holmes County
On March 13, 1800, when lands in the United States Military District became open to entry, Hodijah Baylis located 400 acres on Douty Creek for service in the Revolution. It was the first tract taken up in the county that became Holmes in 1824, and it later became known as the Williams farm in Mechanic Township. No Congress land was entered until the Zanesville land office opened. Ten years later, in April 1810, George and Thomas Carpenter and William and Samuel Morrison settled on the same creek and each grew a small crop of corn, and soon after the Williams farm had its own mill. G. F. Newton, who told this history at the 1876 centennial, noted that the county's early settlers were mainly from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
A lake in the hills
Mechanic Township had been farm country, with coal under its hills and a population that slipped from 1,400 in 1840 to 1,271 in 1880. In 1967 a reservoir of about 220 acres was impounded on the township's State Route 83 side and a private, gated community, Lake Buckhorn, grew around it. By 2020 about 720 people lived in the Lake Buckhorn census-designated place, and the township, which had 2,052 residents in 1990, counted 3,222.
