How Clark Township, Holmes County began

Clark Township, in southeastern Holmes County, was originally named German Township and carried that name through the 1888 county census Henry Howe recorded; it was renamed Clark Township in the 1910s. The township holds Charm and Farmerstown in its interior (Farmerstown was already one of Howe's 'small villages' in 1888) and Unionville in its northeast, and includes part of the village of Baltic, which straddles the Holmes, Tuscarawas and Coshocton county line. Charm is where the Guggisberg Cheese Company, under Alfred Guggisberg, developed Baby Swiss cheese in the mid-1960s. Township population grew from about 2,946 in 1990 to 4,322 by 2020.

Where the name comes from

Originally organized as German Township; renamed Clark Township at some point in the 1910s for reasons not recorded.

Stories

A township that changed its name

Clark Township, in the southeastern corner of Holmes County, was first German Township, and it still appears under that name in Henry Howe's 1888 tables, with 1,281 residents in 1840 and 1,517 in 1880. It was renamed Clark Township in the 1910s. Its villages kept their names: Charm, with its own post office, ZIP 44617, a name of obscure origin; Farmerstown; and Unionville, with part of Baltic in the southeast. In the mid-1960s the Guggisberg Cheese Company outside Charm, owned by Alfred Guggisberg, developed Baby Swiss cheese. The township now has more than 4,300 residents, up from 2,946 in 1990, and sits inside the Holmes County Amish settlement, which the Young Center counted in 2026 at 332 church districts and 38,775 people.
