How Berlin Township, Holmes County began
Berlin Township holds the village of Berlin, the oldest existing village in Holmes County, planned in 1816 by John Swigert (from Berlin, Germany) and Joseph Troyer (from Berlin, Pennsylvania), who combined their two hometowns' shared name for the new settlement. Most early settlers were German or Swiss Pennsylvania-Germans, and the township sits at the historic heart of the Holmes County Amish settlement founded in 1808-09. A school opened in 1818, a post office in 1822, and Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and Mennonite congregations followed. Today Berlin is a commercial center of Ohio's Amish Country tourism industry.
Settled 1808-09 (Amish settlement of the broader area), platted July 2, 1816 (Berlin village), by John Swigert and Joseph Troyer.
Where the name comes from
Named jointly for Berlin, Germany (John Swigert's birthplace) and Berlin, Pennsylvania (Joseph Troyer's home), the two founders sharing the name of their respective hometowns for the new village.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail or burial site specific to Berlin Township was found in the sources checked. The township lies within the broader Delaware/Wyandot/Shawnee hunting territory recorded at the county level; see the Holmes County history for the Greenville Treaty line and Killbuck name context.

Stories
Two Berlins in one name
When John Swigert and Joseph Troyer laid out their village on July 2, 1816, each carried a hometown with him: Swigert had come from Berlin in Germany, Troyer from Berlin, Pennsylvania. Rather than choose one origin over the other, they gave the new Ohio settlement the name both towns already shared. The village grew slowly through the 1810s and 1820s as German- and Swiss-descended families, many arriving from Pennsylvania alongside the Amish families settling nearby Walnut Creek, built the school, churches and post office that turned a plat of lots into a functioning town — one that would become, two centuries later, the commercial heart of the largest concentration of Amish life in Ohio.
A senator's house
The Pomerene House, built on Berlin's Main Street in 1879 in the Italianate style, is remembered as the home of Atlee Pomerene, the Ohio senator whom President Calvin Coolidge appointed as one of two individuals to investigate the Teapot Dome scandal of the Harding administration. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
