How Geauga County began

Geauga County was created by the Ohio General Assembly on March 1, 1806, the second county organized out of the Connecticut Western Reserve, from territory taken out of Trumbull County. Its name comes from an Iroquoian word for raccoon, originally applied to the Grand River; Chardon was chosen as county seat in 1809 after competition from a rival site near present Painesville. The county's borders were repeatedly reduced as Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, and finally Lake County (1840) were organized from its territory. Burton, settled in July 1798, was the first permanent settlement in the county; Chardon and Middlefield -- the latter home to the world's fourth-largest Amish settlement, founded in 1886 -- remain its most prominent towns today.
