How Middlefield began
Middlefield village grew from the 1799 settlement of Isaac and James Thompson and was originally called Batavia before being renamed for its position midway between Painesville and Warren; it incorporated in 1901. The village is the commercial center of the world's fourth-largest Amish settlement, though few Amish live within its limits, and today draws more than 80 percent of its income tax from industrial and commercial business -- Geauga County's industrial capital. Middlefield grew from 640 residents in 1910 to 2,748 by 2020.
Settled 1799 (Isaac and James Thompson), incorporated 1901, by Isaac and James Thompson, first settlers; originally named Batavia.
Where the name comes from
Originally called Batavia, the village was renamed Middlefield because it sat midway between Painesville and Warren.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or site specific to Middlefield is documented in the sources consulted.
Timeline

- — "Uncle Silas" Young, a Quaker, builds the settlement's first saw-mill on Swine Creek, said to be the first framed building in the township.
- — Civil organization unites Middlefield with Huntsburg as a single township named Batavia.
- — James Thompson, son of first settler Isaac Thompson, dies October 15 at age ninety-eight on the homestead his father made, having been twice married and the father of fifteen children.
- — The Johnson Pail Company is founded, an early manufacturer in the village.
- — Middlefield incorporates as a village.
- — The Batavia House, at 14979 South State Street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 16.
- — The village's population is recorded at 640.
- — The first clash over Ohio's mandatory school-attendance law occurs in Geauga County when three Amish fathers are fined for not sending their children to ninth grade.
- — U.S. Census records 2,748 residents in Middlefield village, which by this time draws more than 80 percent of its income tax from industrial and commercial business and sits at the center of the world's fourth-largest Amish settlement.
Stories
A settlement founded in 1886, fourth-largest in the world
The Amish community centered on Middlefield was established in 1886, decades after Ohio's oldest and largest Amish settlement in Holmes County, founded in 1808. It grew steadily through the twentieth century -- a 1973 photograph of young Amish men in Middlefield shows a community already well established -- and by 2020 the county's Amish population was estimated at about 9,549 adherents, part of a wider Geauga settlement of roughly 19,420 members by 2021, making it the fourth-largest Amish settlement in the world. Very few Amish live within Middlefield's own village limits, but the village is their commercial hub, and the settlement's presence has shaped the area since at least 1914, when three Amish fathers were fined in one of Ohio's earliest legal clashes over mandatory school attendance beyond eighth grade.

48,877 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
