How Auburn Township, Geauga County began
Auburn Township was settled in 1814 or 1815 by the Bradley and Snow families from South Newbury, New Hampshire; the 1879 county history names Bildad Bradley specifically as the first settler, arriving in 1815. No municipality has ever incorporated within the township's borders, and it remains one of Geauga County's rural townships, with 6,574 residents in 2020. Its Free Will Baptist Church, built by the same denomination that ran the Geauga Seminary in neighboring Chester Township, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Illinois House Speaker Clayton E. Crafts was born here.
Settled 1814 (Wikipedia) or 1815 (Bildad Bradley, per the 1879 county history), incorporated March 1817 (organized jointly with "Kentstown," now Bainbridge Township, under the name Troy; severed from Bainbridge and separately organized by an unrecorded date, with the first known separate township election in 1827), by The Bradley and Snow families, from South Newbury, New Hampshire.
Where the name comes from
Not explained in the sources consulted; the 1879 county history's own chronicler, working from a pioneer's manuscript, states he does not know when the township was severed from Bainbridge or "how she came to be called Auburn." The township was earlier known, jointly with neighboring Bainbridge, as "Troy" under a March 1817 organizing order -- a name unconnected to Geauga's present-day Troy Township (the former Welshfield), which lies elsewhere in the county. Wikipedia notes only that Ohio has two other Auburn Townships, in Crawford and Tuscarawas counties.

Stories
A house fire and a lost child
Among Auburn's 1815 arrivals were Zadock Reuwees and John Jackson, who came from Massachusetts, made small improvements, then returned home before bringing their families out later that year. Reuwees's wife was a daughter of early settler Oliver Sizer. Not long after they settled near the state road, their house burned, killing their only child at the time -- a tragedy the 1879 county history says was still recounted as a "sad legend" around cabin fires in the township decades later. The family recovered and had more children; a surviving son, Lorenzo S. Reuwees, later occupied the old homestead.
William Crafts, pioneer of Auburn Corners
William Crafts was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 21, 1789, a descendant of Griffin Crafts, who had emigrated from England in Governor Winthrop's colony of 1635 and settled in Roxbury, Massachusetts. William moved to Auburn in 1815 and became one of its leading pioneers: in 1821 he built, of hewed logs, the first school-house at Auburn Corners and taught the first classes there himself, though the 1879 county history notes he never attended school himself for more than three months in his life. His son Jeremiah, born in a log house south of the Corners, was Auburn's first native-born white child. William Crafts died in Auburn on August 25, 1876, at eighty-six.
